I have just hired the film "There's only one Jimmy Grimble" and I must say that I had a very enjoyable evening. It's light-hearted and a bit on the predictable side but all in all makes pleasant viewing.
Jimmy Grimble is a small kid who supports Man City and gets regularly bullied by the bigger school kids who just happen to be Man Utd fans. He and his mum live in a council flat and football is Jimmy's life.
One day when he is trying to escape his bullies he meets this mad old lady (who is very witch-like) and she gives him a pair of "magic football boots". The bullies steal Jimmy's football boots so he is forced to use the one's that the old lady gave him which have surprising results.
Jimmy decides to try out for the School football team which has a very apathetic coach (played by Robert Carlyle). The reason for the coach's apathy is revealed later in the film.
The Under 16's Schools Cup gets underway and Jimmy starts off as Sub but when he makes an appearance of course his boots show more than a little bit of magic and he starts banging in goals. Predictably Jimmy's school Greenock get through to the final which is to be played at Maine Road, Manchester City's football ground. One of the kids that has been bullying Jimmy (who just happens to be a Beckham lookalike) nicks Jimmy's magic boots and Jimmy goes to pieces. But of course at half time a pep talk from his coach (and his mum's ex boyfriend) he discovers that perhaps it isn't his boots that are magic afterall. Which then all makes for a very happy ending.
There are a couple of sub-plots involving his mum, her new boyfriend (who is a complete idiot and creep) and her ex boyfriend who she found out was married but an altogether nice guy (played by the excellent Ray Winstone).
I really enjoyed this nice english film and it was good to see Ray Winstone playing a nice guy for once. The downside is that the plot is totally predictable but it really is a fun all round feelgood movie which makes for easy viewing.

I havent seen this film but the plot sounds very similar to a story that used to appear in the Tiger comic - Billys Boots, in this the boots used to belong to Dixie Dean and made Billy play just like him.

Advantages: Truly a happy-go-lucky film. Very entertaining. Excellent acting on all counts, and top music. Disadvantages: We've seen it all before. Very predictable, and quite cliched as well.
