Daniel Day Lewis delivers an absolutely stunning performance in this film and he is ably supported by an excellent supporting cast and a well thought out storyline.
The film tells the story of the life of a ruthless oil baron called Daniel Plainview who is played by Lewis, Plainview makes JR Ewing look like a big softie as he is prepared, in fact driven, to crush all those who oppose him and he is quite prepared to use violence to get what he wants. In the process those around him pay a high price indeed and ultimatley it affects his relationship with his own family.
The story is set in California at the beginning of the 20th centuary where Plainview hears about the potential to extract oil and goes about acquiring the land from the resident farmers, he finds little opposition initially however when many of the promises he makes turn out to be empty ones he attracts the attention of a preacher played by David Willis who is excellent in the role.

I found this film to be ver powerful with a lot of depth, I can see why Lewis picked up an oscar for his performance as it was pure quality and the film is really well directed as well.
It is quite violent but this never spills over into being gratuitous as all and it is certanly used to good impact to make this a very enjoyable film indeed.
