There Will be Blood - I think this title is very fitting for this movie. It's like a warning, there will be blood and oh my gosh, how definitely true this statement was.
There Will be Blood is a 2007 film staring Daniel Day Lewis in the lead role. He actually went on to win the 2007 Academy Award for best Actor for his portrayal of Daniel Plainview. Overall the film was nominated for eight Academy Awards.
The film is set in California at the turn of the 20th century and follows the fortunes of oil prospectors. Daniel and his son begin a ruthless quest for wealth and oil field domination and are determined that nothing will get in their way.
The film starts out quite eerily in setting the scene. In fact for the first 15 minutes or so there is no talking and the only sounds we hear is from the spooky cello and piano music. The scenery is quite dark and definitely paints the landscape like it must have been back then. It really suits this type of work as well, the dark, loneliness of the oil fields. It makes prospecting for oil look extremely hard and dangerous and not something you want to be involved in if you are just a lowly worker.
Daniel Plainview receives a tip from a young boy about some very profitable land which he assures him has oil and this leads Daniel down the path of madness!! His relationship with a young preacher in the town then forms the rest of the movie and takes some dark scary turns.
In my opinion Daniel Day Lewis was definitely deserving of the Oscar. His portrayal was focused, determined and scary and you can imagine men of that time acting exactly like his character did. He dressed the part and I think had the same type of voice and menace in his eyes that people must have done to survive in those conditions.
Paul Dano plays the young preacher, Eli Sunday. He seems to be quite an awkward kid and not too sure of himself, that is until he is in front of his congregation and then he is wild. In some scenes he is almost possessed by a wild animal it seems and almost foams at the mouth trying to eradicate the devil from people. Really great powerful scenes but they left me saying, "what the!!", that guy is crazy!!! Their back and forth relationship, at one point one man is above the other, then circumstances change and the other one was on top and it was really interesting to see how their fortunes changed and how their standings changed.
The film was quite long, maybe a bit too long if I'm honest. I think there were quite a few parts nearer the end that could have been cut but they did add to the story though. I will not ruin the ending but it left me a bit shocked.
The film was very well received by cinema goers. It made $40.1 million in North America and $32.7 million in the rest of the world, with a worldwide total of $72.9 million, well above its $25 million budget.
There are not too many extras on this DVD, there are just some pictures and research for the making of the movie. The film lasts for approximately 152 minutes and is rated 15 due to very strong language.
