I fell in love with this film on the first time I saw it and it’s one of the few films I bought on DVD despite having the VHS original( Others include Exorcist, Alien Saga…but I digress). With so much going for it this film would have had trouble to disappoint. Superb cast (Geena Davis, Susan Sarandon, Harvey Kietel, Michael Madson and little known [at the time] Brad Pitt) a great director (Ridley Scott) and a cool storyline (road movie, but his time with the girls). I’m not big on typical so called ‘chick flicks’ but this one certainly appeals to the guys too…
Thelma and Louise (Davis and Sarandon) are stuck in their dead end jobs in the middle of nowhere….Davis is particularly stuck as her overbearing husband doesn’t like her to go off and do her own thing so when the girls head off in the car for a holiday he ain’t too impressed and Davis begins to come out of her shell.
The girls come to a bar where they have a few drinks and Davis gets taken outside buy a guy who tries to rape her. Fortunately Sarandon arrives to save the day but goes a bit to far, shooting the guy dead.
Now they are on the run and the remainder of the film sees them running from the law (headed by Kietel) and getting up to all sorts of mischief.
Brilliantly acted, lovely scenery and both heartfelt and very funny, Thelma and Louise was a pretty groundbreaking movie for casting two women in a typically guy scenario….it works wonderfully.
The action heats up all the way through to the somewhat ambiguous finale/twist. This ending (which I won’t spoil for those who haven’t seen it) is seen to be one thing or the other by viewers…I’m pretty strong in what I believe happens, which makes the film all the more daring and cool…see what you think for yourself.
A great piece of cinema, with very strong female leads (for a change) a must see for all, even us guys.
The DVD itself isn’t overly filled with goodies. As well as the usual stuff (chapter selection, Subtitles etc) we get an extended version of that ambiguous ending (which is kinda cool, but not as good as the theatrical cut) and much more importantly we get a commentary track from Scott. His commentary tracks are all superb (Alien, Gladiator) and this is no exception.
A somewhat bare disc but the film itself more than warrants it’s purchase. Top stuff.
