After the bold and daring first series, we open up once more into the world of the X Files. With a year of experience under their belts, the creative team decided to take things to a new level in Season 2, a challenge which I believe they met brilliantly.
Opening post-shut down of the X Files themselves, the early episodes of this season focus mainly on Mulder, giving Gillian Anderson the much needed break to give birth. How is this executed? Watch and find out - it's a definite shocker. But rest assured, the remainder of the season once again teams Mulder and Scully together to try and discover more about alien conspiracies and the strange world in which we live. Bold strides were taken with the writing for many of the episodes - with strange concepts such as killer fungus ("Firewalker"), a human-flukeworm hybrid ("The Host") or even the crazy carnival episode "Humbug", new strides are taken with ideas no one would have ever thought of before. And yet we still have time for the old favourites - vampires in "3", voodoo in "Fresh Bones" and even possession in "The Calusari".
However, one of the boldest and best creative moves in this season was one of my all time favourite episodes - "Irresistible" - in which the culprit is not supernatural, but entirely human. Detatching from the usual spooky theme, the episode still has enough creep in it to make sure you keep your lights on for weeks. Not to mention it shows a personal journey for Scully which it's possible for us all to relate to - the realization that true evil comes not from monsters or demons, but from human beings themselves.
As for the conspiracy angle, Season 2 lays important groundwork for the remainder of the show - introducing the alien bounty hunter storyline, the slimy and always hateable Krycek, as well as the ever present Anasazi connection to the conspiracy which'll have you scratching your head for days - as well as wondering just how they can continue with a third season. But continue they do, thanks in large to the excellent contribution of the series' sophomore season.
That said, there are some errors in Season 2, being 25 episodes long. Some of the episodes will seem a little tacky with regards to special effects (especially in this day and age), as well as some of the storylines a tad too unbelieveable (even for X Files), but all in all the good far outweighs the bad, and with a host of special features to keep you amused for hours - it's definitely value for money - and will have you clambering to buy the remaining 7 seasons in no time.

A good summary of season two but you did not actually review the box set with its extras and so on. When it comes to a box set for an entire season I expect more than just a summary of the episodes but how the acting is throughout the season, if it improved, worsened, who is in the show, favourite episodes, least favourite and the all important DVD extras.
