I had not watched the X files for some years, however with the sudden demand for TV titles being released on DVD I felt this had to worth another viewing.
25 season two episodes for a less than £20 is a real steal, and you would have to be very foolish to miss this.
My initial fears that the series would look dated were put at ease almost immediately, and the series is still superior to most television shows today.
For those who missed the X files previously let me explain the basic plot. The X files are cases investigated by the FBI that remain unsolved due to unexplained reasons. Special Agent Fox "Spooky" Mulder has made it his life work to investigate these claims even though it has damaged his reputation. Mulder believes that these cases are usually as a result of the paranormal. Mulder is assisted by Special Agent Dana Scully who with her medical background believes that the answer to the cases can be explained by science.
During the first season in which the due investigated cases involving alien abduction, ghosts and serial killers the relationship between the agents became closer. Whilst Scully remains a skeptic she has a greater understanding for Mulders views.
The previous series ended with Mulder risking his life to investigate a UFO cover up and ended in the death of his informant.
The first episode starts with Mulder and Scully separated and the X files disbanded. Mulder is disillusioned with life in the FBI after he is assigned to routine wire tapping whilst Scully is back at Quantico where she is training rookie agents.
We are also introduced to new character including Assistant Director Skinner, who may or may not be on Mulder's sky. We also meet Mr X a new informant, who is not as friendly as his predecessor.
The 2nd season is where the seeds of the conspiracy really begin and we are introduced to the Cigarette Smoking man and also become aware of Mulders family background
The 2nd season contains some of the best episodes of the entire series and ends with the cliff hanger episode (which forced me to by the 3rd series!). Personally my favourite episodes include, "humbug" in which they investigate suspicious murders at a freak show.
One of the reasons that the programme appealed to me is that there was a fine balance of drama, suspense and comedy. Mulder has some great one liners and adds real depth to his character.
The acting is top notch, not only from the two leading characters but also the supporting cast. The interaction between Mulder and Scully is great and clearly evolves as the series progresses.
You don't have to be a fan of science fiction in order to enjoy the X files as most of the episodes are gripping thrillers and due to some strong writing the plots remain quite believable.
The DVD can be picked up for as little as £13.99 (which works out as about 60p per episode!), I brought mine from Play, however I have seen this in most retailers for the same price.
I can honestly say that I enjoyed every episode and would recommend to people who are either wanting nostalgia or watching for the first time.
