---The Season---
What do you mean you've never heard of the X-Files, where have you been living for the last decade? The X-Files is only the most innovative Science Fiction programme ever to have graced the small screen. With an intriguing mix of horror (the episode Squeeze was recently voted the 13th scariest moment in a Channel Four poll), drama and the supernatural, with just a hint of sexual chemistry and will they, won't they, I've always found this compulsive viewing.
So what's it all about? I hear you cry….
Well, firstly we have FBI agent, Fox "Spooky" Mulder (David Duchovny), a brilliant Oxford educated (all the best schools are in Britain, don't ya know) psychologist, who specialises in all things wacky, unidentified and supernatural. Haunted by the childhood abduction of his sister, he's desire to believe is only kept in check by his partner, Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) a qualified doctor who was actually sent to spy on him. Together our intrepid pair, investigate any case where an ordinary, everyday explanation cannot be found.
For those of you who might have come into Mulder's world a little late in the game, you'll be pleased to know that this (the first) season sets the tone for the eight to come. Although almost all (21/24) of the episodes are standalone, the basis for all the mythology is there, from the conspiracy theories, to the Smoking Man to the aliens it's all there. And the final episode leaves everything on a wonderfully climatic cliff-hanger that leaves you gagging for more…..
---The Presentation---
As I said at the beginning of the review, I'm basically a Sci-Fi geek and the boxset is certainly this geek's idea of perfection. From the functional yet stylish packaging, to the glossy companion booklet, to the fact that the special features demand a disc all of their own, this is manna from heaven. The picture and sound quality are perfectly adequate, there are many, many dark scenes and yet everything is clear, although the fact that this is a little on the older side is evident. For the majority of the time the 2.0 surround sound is adequate, but there is the occasional scene that would have benefited from the upgraded 5.1 system. The motion menu is not too long (although there are those silly copyright warnings), and it is extremely easy to navigate to both episodes and special features, but there is no "play all" option available, which is a shame.
And on to the special features, and boy are they special. Firstly there is a PC game, unfortunately this does insist that you install a software DVD player (which I was a little reluctant to do), but it follows the progress and tests your knowledge of the season. It's not the most exciting of games, and there are no fancy graphics, but it's worth spending a few minutes on here and there. As someone who finds most commentaries annoying rather than informative, I'm pleased to say that no disc space has been wasted on these. What you get instead are a heady number of documentaries, interviews and TV spots, all of which contain little snippets of background information.
The first of these is actually labelled a documentary, but it doesn't actually give us the most in-depth look at the season, it felt more like an overview. That's not to say it's not interesting to the fan, because it most definitely is, but to get a better insight into the thinking behind the programme, I would definitely suggest watching the interviews with creator Chris Carter. It's here he goes into a little bit of detail about twelve of his favourite episodes from the season. As if we hadn't already been given enough background, there is another treat in the shape of some micro-features that were (apparently) shown on the Fx channel, which again delve into the background and mythology of the X-Files.
The final features on the specials disc, are not quite as informative, but do provide an insight into how the programme was first advertised on the Fox network. Yep, you've got it it's a complete series of ads. At first I thought these were pointless, but after watching them I did feel all nostalgic, won't be watching them again though. There are only two deleted scenes in the whole set (from the pilot episode), which you can watch in context by having them added to the episode, or on their own. I would suggest watching them in context though, because they don't make a lot of sense on their own.
There is only one other set of features, and I'm not particularly sure why these were added. You can watch "international" clips from various episodes. All these clips did for me is make me laugh, you truly haven't fully experienced the X-Files until you've heard the main characters conversing in Japanese.

---The Complete Boxset---
This is a brilliant boxset, it has everything a fan (or geek) could want, the complete first series, with all the creepy, gross-out and plain scary moments and enough special features to turn your eyes square. If you've never watched a single episode (why not?) then you probably shouldn't buy this without checking the series out on the television first (one of the digital channels is currently showing re-runs) as this is the kind of programme you either love or hate. As you've probably gathered I fall firmly into the love camp, while my husband hates it and spends the whole time watching asking questions. One other point, is that this is purely adult viewing, it's not something to watch while the kiddies are up, the 15 rating is there for a very good reason. There are some moments when I jumped out of my seat, and I knew they were coming. But if you have ever watched and enjoyed the X-Files (or even just liked it) then what are you waiting for......at this price it's a steal.

Review of The X-Files - Series 1 - Complete (M-Lock Packaging) (DVD)
Advantages: Strong start, many classic episodes. Now cheaper too. Disadvantages: A few inevitably terrible shows as the series finds its feet.
...'The X-Files' was one of the definitive TV shows of the 90s, and this first season holds up surprisingly well even in light of what was to come over the following nine looooooooong years. As a debut season that was being written pretty much as it went along, the characters are a little more one-dimensional and the show's main 'mythology' storyline often contradicts itself, but a commendable portion of these first twenty-four episodes continue to ... ...the rapid decline in quality that came after the 1997 feature film.
Collected together on a 7 DVD set, these episodes set the tone for every season to follow: a fascinating show every once in a while that concerns the show's main storyline of government cover-ups and alien visitations, and a bunch of mostly unconnected episodes that stand alone and often provide 'monster-of-the-week' cheap shocks. Considering that a first season is often a trial ...

Advantages: great value, disc devoted to extras, quality show Disadvantages: not the best series of the show, packaging annoying for some
*The X Files*
The X Files was created by Chris Carter in 1993. It tells the story of Fox Mulder, an FBI agent who is hell bent on knowing the 'truth' after his sister's abduction at the age of 8. He works on the X Files, cases which are basically very weird, and cannot be solved via scientific or other legitimately accepted ways. The X Files range from murdering humans with genetic defects to alien abductions.
*Season 1*
In season 1 there are ... ...very good opening episode to the series (much better than say Buffy the Vampire Slayer's opening episode, that was rubbish!). The season mainly revolves around stand alone episodes, there being only one main story arc which develops slowly. I won't say because I don't want to spoil it! However this story arc is fantastic and ends in the last episode, great! There are a couple of mini arcs, for instance the story in the 3rd episode squeeze is only ...

Advantages: 24 episodes of one of the greatest programmes ever! Disadvantages: Some features would have been nice
...program is referred to as the new x files, however the original is still the best.
It is strange to think that the X Files is more than 10 years old, however it does not look dated and still retains the ability to intrigue the viewer.
The X files refers to FBI cases which are mysterious and unsolved. The cases are investigated by Fox (spooky) Mulder who has been banished to a basement office. Mulder a once high flier within the bureau has sacrified ... ...Mulder and is originally given the task of debunking the X Files, whilst Mulder is a "Believer" , Scully believes in scientific explanations.
The relationship between the two agents grows throughout the series as each admires the others convictions, even though they contradict each other.
The series really had me hooked from day one and upon buying the DVD I found myself addicted to each episode.
The episodes are based on several conspiracy theories ...
