Sir Robert King who is a British oil tycoon, and a friend of M is assassinated by Renard, an international terrorist. MI-6 had sent agent 009 to kill Renard. Although 009 had shot Renard in the head, he did not die. The bullet since then has slowly made its way towards his cerebral cortex; numbing him of any physical sensation in the process. Although the bullet will eventually kill him, Renard grows more powerful with each passing day, as he is able to exert himself more than any other human. M feels that Elektra King who is King's daughter, and the inheritor of the oil business is under threat. James Bond is sent to protect her. Renard had kidnapped Elektra demanding a ransom for her release. The British government and MI-6 refuse to negotiate with the terrorist. But, mysteriously Elektra manages to get herself free. James Bond forms a romantic relationship with Elektra. Renard steals a quantity of weapons-grade plutonium from a former Russian ICBM base in Kazakhstan. James Bond tries to stop him, but, Renard manages to get away with the plutonium. Here Bond meets American nuclear physicist Christmas Jones. The two try to diffuse a nuclear device set to blow the king pipeline. But, Bond discovers that the amount of plutonium in the bomb is significantly less, and lets the bomb blow, so that the enemies presume that Bond is dead. This confirms Bond's suspicion of Elektra's alliance with Renard. M is kidnapped by Elektra. Renard manages to hijack a russian submarine, and blow it with the plutonium near istanbul so that the effect would prevent shipment of Caspian Sea petroleum through any existing route for tankers through the Bosporus. The only alternative would be the King pipeline. Bond and Valentin Zukovsky manage to track Renard and Elektra. One of Zukovsky's henchman betrays him and sets off a bomb, but, both manage to escape the assassination ploy, but Bond and Jones are captured by Elektra's men. They are taken to the hideout and Bond is tortured, where Elektra tells him," I could have given him the world"; Bond in turn replies with," The world is not enough". Valentin Zukovsky comes for Bond's rescue, and manages to free him, but in the process is killed by Elektra. Bond frees M, and commands EleKtra to call Renard back. Elektra answers saying," You cant kill me, because you will miss me." and then urges Renard to go ahead. Bond shoots her dead and says," I never miss". Bond then dives in to get into the submarine. There he kills Renard and frees jones. Together they celebrate the new year in turkey. MI-6 tries to track him, and they find him making love with jones. R who is Q's successor shuts the viewer and says," Must be some premature form of the Millenium bug".
Review:
The plot is fast paced and well handled. Pierce Brosnan as the sauve, cold blooded Bond wins your heart. But, unlike most Bond girls Elektra King played by Sophie Marceau has a major impact on Bond as well as the movie. She is a powerful, intelligent and ambitious woman who manages to trick Bond on more than one occasion. Robbie Coltrane as Valentin Zukovsky is extremely witty and manages to steal the show. The action scenes are well choreographed and you get to view some beautiful locations. Robert Carlyle as the reckless and desperate Renard has done well. All in all, a movie definetly worth a watch.
