Pierce Brosnan is fast proving why he was the ideal choice to play superspy James Bond as he enters his third Bond movie in explosive style. James Bond films are all about interesting stories matched to fantastic action sequences and this film is no exception.
The main plot of the movie is based around an evil maniac, played by Robert Carlyle who, thanks to a bullet, is unable to feel any pain. His main aim is to take over the oil business by wreaking the main western source of oil through Kazakstahn and supplying his own oil instead. Throw in the daughter of an oil baron, Elektra (played by the lovely Sophie Marceau), who is angry at the fact that a ransom wasn't paid when she was kidnapped and wants revenge on the people who made the decision and another great performance from Robbie Coltraine, who re-afirms his character from Goldeneye and you have a fantastic line up ready for action.
From the start this film oozes great action moments, with boat chases past the Millenium dome, a ski chase with motorised mini-copters and a great moment with a giant rotor-saw attached to a helicopter that splits everything (including cars and buildings) in two! The difference between this and, say Mission Impossible 2 is that the storyline has been well thought out and is as engaging as the action. Bond is his usual suarve, martini drinking self and Desmond Llewelyn, who unfortunately died after this film was made, is great in his last ever appearance as Q. John Cleese looks to be a nice future substitute, adding the comedy element that is so important to the Bond films.
Sound is used wonderfully in the film, you'll start ducking under the sofa when you hear the bullets bouncing around the back speakers and explosions will rock your house thoughout the film. This is one of those films where you will want to crank up the speakers and hope the neighbours don't complain! The picture is worth a mention, clear and crisp, it show every detail and makes it easy to see all the action.
The menu system is wonderfully animated and hides a plethora of extra features that are both interesting and informing. The best of these is the great stunt deconstruction of the river thames boat chase and fitting tribute to Desmond Llewelyn that will bring a tear to your eye. This is yet another film that re-affirms Bond as one of the greatest British heroes ever and is a worthy addition to anyone's DVD collection, shaken or stirred.
