to the classic John Barry era; on The World Is Not Enough he leaves Barry's legacy behind to build a new and distinctive sound all his own. The marvel is, it's still recognisably, undeniably, thrillingly Bond. The series producers knew they'd made a mistake last time around by selecting Sheryl Crow's limp "Tomorrow Never Dies" song as the opener (Arnold's own, superior take on it, "Surrender", was apologetically included over the end credits), so this time they've made good with "The World Is Not Enough", once again penned by Arnold and veteran Bond lyricist Don Black (who wrote the words for "Thunderball" among others). Garbage help out all they can, but it's unmistakably Arnold's song, a bold, swaggering piece in the best tradition of the series. Shirley Manson is no Shirley Bassey, although her husky vocals have a sexy allure all their own. The score itself is a roller-coaster ride around all the larger-than-life ingredients of great Bond music--sassy, devil-may-care brass, swooning, sultry strings--updated with electronics and samples to produce a "Bond with beats" sound that's utterly contemporary, yet still classically Bond. There's plenty of diversity among the action set-pieces, too, with the romantic "Elektra's Theme", a little lounge ("Casino", naturally), and even another song "Only Myself to Blame" (sung in true crooner fashion by Scott Walker no less) making for an album that's overflowing with good reasons to acquire it. David Arnold, it seems, was born to play Bond. --Mark Walker

The new wave of the Bond team has by now set itself into a comfortable slot, and has attracted a good following with the style of filming and characterisation. The World Is Not Enough is a great example of all of this, with three/four Bond girls, and some awesome villains, not to mention another world domination plot.
The Plot
James Bond is sent to find the man who ordered the killing of M's friend, Sir Robert King, British oil tycoon. The assassin was under the employ of Renard, a man who had previously survived an assassination atempt by 009, but was left with a bullet in his head, leaving him impervious to pain. Believing King's daughter, Elektra, to be Renard's intended target, Bond is dispatched to protect her and the oil pipeline she is now in charge of following her father's death, and discovers that Renard is more than a match for the MI6 agent.
The Cast and Performances
Pierce Brosnan has Bond nailed. With the combination of his charisma and his action ability, the actor leaves me with a sense of feeling that he IS James Bond, not merely an actor playing the character. Another brilliant performance. French beauty Sophie Marceau plays Elektra King, a woman in a powerful but vulnerable position, and is sexy and entrancing in the role. Denise Richards plays American nuclear physicist Christmas Jones, and is rather revealing and sultry in the role, while Serena Scott Thomas oozes as Dr Molly Warmflash (how do they choose these names!), and Maria Grazia Cucinotta opens the film with her performance as the assassin Renard sends after Sir Robert King, known only as the Cigar Girl.
In terms of a villain, the brilliant Robert Carlyle is ever so scary as Renard. With a scar and a bullet in his brain, and an attitude to match, the man is virtually rabid in the role, hungry for Bond's blood, and the blood of anyone who will stand in his way of sabotaging just about anything in the world. Carlyle gives perhaps the best performance in the film - haunting.
Desmond Llewelyn, Dame Judi Dench and Samanatha Bond return again as Q, M and Miss Moneypenny, with Q's protege R being added to the fold, played by John Cleese, obviously no stranger to the tongue in cheek side of acting following his comedic days with the Monty Python crew, Fawlty Towers, and That Was The Week That Was, to name but a few of his credits. He fits in very well in what is to become a constant role, hopefully. Robbie Coltrane also reprises his role as Valentin Zukovsky, Russian mafia boss.
The remainder of the cast support the film very well.
My Opinion
This is one of the easiest Bond films to remember as the plot is rather less complicated. Naturally, Bond films tend to have a twist in them, and this one's is no less surprising than any other, and I will not ruin it for you, but the cast do everything so well in this film that a simple plot is turned into a brilliant film. Director Michael Apted does well behind the camera, as he brings something different. Although I did like the run of Bond films directed by John Glen that followed each other because of the consistency they gave the character, it is nice and refreshing to see such a variety in direction from film to film in the later part of the Bond series so far.
The special effects are once again marvellous, with Bond unsurprisingly being unstoppable thanks to Q and R's gadgetry, and the explosions just keep on coming, with the technical guys on this film deserving a special mention for their work. The only criticism I do have is that this is ever so slightly over the top in places.
Released in 1999, The World Is Not Enough was originally scheduled for 2000, and the title was rumoured to be Bond 2000, amongst other things. In the end, the title was decided by choosing a phrase from the only Bond film to feature George Lazenby as Bond, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, where the phrase is mentioned in its Latin form, proving that the titles of the Bond films are not random!!!
Garbage perform the title track, written by Arnold & Black, now firm Bond musical writers. On its release, the film did very well, and exceeded all previous Bond films at the box office. Bond seems to go from strength to strength.
Conclusion
Going all out on Bond this time with famous faces and even more Bond girls and special effects.

...DVD is worth buying for the extras alone. There are a couple of documentaries on there, and a touching tribute to Desmond Llewellyn (Q). There is also the music video for Garbage's title song.
The film itself is not your standard Bond blockbuster, they've obviously tried hard to develop the characters a bit more. Judi Dench in particular is given a much greater part than usual, which is deserved, since she is a fine actress. Pierce Brosnan now fits ... ...Carlyle is excellent as Renard, the bad guy who feels no pain due to a bullet lodged in his brain.
The film starts with perhaps the best of the Bond pre-title sequences, the boat chase up the river Thames. There are numerous other stunts throughout, but these are never to the detriment of the plot. The film shows up well on DVD, and is a must buy for any Bond fan. ...

Advantages: acting Disadvantages: noot up to usual boond quality
Watching the film makes you wonder what really goes in on Bond's head. For the millionth time he has a high-speed ski chase, yet this is no stunt man then close-up of Roger Moore in front of a filmed backdrop situation. Okay, well, it IS, but effects have improved so that it is almost believable that Brosnan is leaping all over the place and stopping four very nice flying bobsleighs. Does he think of his parents, killed in the novels during an avalanche? ... ...and this is very much the now, with a 007 that leaps onto the Millennium Dome with possibly the best title sequence in memory. A herd of Rorsharch ink blot tests fill the screen to a so-so song by Garbage, though sadly there is very little psychology in the film, amateur or otherwise. This pans out into a film that loses its muster ever-so-slightly, but still packs enough involvement to keep the viewer interested. ...

Advantages: Great cast, decent script Disadvantages: Bit drab in places
After the fun but cut and paste Tomorrow Never Dies (which ran out of steam about halfway through) a slight change of direction was required for Pierce Brosnan's third adventure. Michael Apted, a director not known for action or adventure films, was chosen to helm the film. The emphasis was clear. Content that their stunt crews could handle the action, Eon decided to pick a director who could work with actors and give their cast more to do than simply run away from explosions. The WorldIsNotEnough would be the stripped-down and more realistic Brosnan Bond. Did they succeed? The answer is almost. Apted is the biggest strength of the film but also a weakness.
At the start of the film Bond has to collect Sir Robert King's stolen money in Bilbao. Things go pear-shaped and he has to escape from a building several floors up. The scene ...
Advantages: The opening sequence with the boat chase on the Thames Disadvantages: Denise Richards character did begin to get on my nerves after a little while
The WorldisnotEnough, the last Bond film to feature Desmond Llewlyn who played Q in a total of 17 James Bond films.
Pierce Brosnan is back and co-starring with Full Monty and Trainspotting actor Robert Carlyle who plays Victor "Renard" Zokas. The Bond girls are the lovely Denise Richards (Charlie Sheen's wife) who plays Dr. Christmas Jones and Sophie Marceau plays the seductive and mysterious Elektra King.
Basically when British oil tycoon Sir Robert King is blown up at MI6, 007 is sent to protect the heir and daughter of the deceased Elektra King. However a terrorist with an unusual characteristic (a bullet lodged in his brain making him immune to all forms of pain) launches a scheme to seize control of the global oil supply, leaving 007 little time to once again save the world from international catastrophe.

does an Arnold towards the end in a Cowboy style and shoots all the bad guys while walking the ship to get to Carver. The Bond theme is blaring out while he does this.
David Arnold wrote the soundtrack and this is a revisit to earlier Bond films with a 60's feel such as the Bond theme played when Bond make his first appearance. This felt fresh and elevated important moments of the film.
The main song is sung by Cheryl Crow with the far better song sang over the end titles by KD Lang.

DVD Description
Complete with ski chases, casino hijinks, high-tech gadgetry, and sultry women, the 19th installment in the James Bond franchise features the increasingly at ease Pierce Brosnan in his third appearance as 007, in a race to save the world's oil supply. Sophie Marceau (BRAVEHEART) stars as Elektra King, the daughter of a murdered oil tycoon, while Robert Carlyle (THE FULL MONTY) plays one of the most unusual Bond villains ever: Renard, who is unable to feel pain because of a bullet lodged in his brain. Director Michael Apted, known for such films as COAL MINER'S DAUGHTER, was brought in to bring more drama to the story and more complex female characters. One of the fruits of Apted's involvement is that M (Judi Dench) gets to move from behind her desk, while curvy Denise Richards (WILD THINGS) gets to show off more than her figure. Dangerous stunt work, exhilarating action sequences, and a rousing theme song from alternative rock band Garbage make this a worthy addition to the 007 series. The film also marks the 17th and final appearance of Desmond Llewelyn as Q; John Cleese is introduced as Q's successor, R.
