tell the story of the war through the testimony of key participants - from civilians to ordinary soldiers from statesmen to generals. First broadcast in 1973 the result was a unique and irreplaceable record since many of the eyewitnesses captured on film did not have long to live. The programme's producers committed hundreds of interview-hours to tape in its creation but only a fraction of that recorded material made it to the final cut. For more than 30 years the interviews have never been allowed to be published - until now.The well-known names interviewed for the series include Albert Speer Karl Wolff (Himmler's adjutant) Traudl Junge (Hitler's secretary) James Stewart (USAAF bomber pilot and Hollywood star) Anthony Eden John Colville (Parliamentary Private Secretary to Winston Churchill) Averell Harriman (US Ambassador to Russia) and Arthur 'Bomber' Harris (Head of RAF Bomber Command).Highly respected historian and bestselling author Richard Holmes has skilfully woven this valuable original material into a compelling narrative creating a truly phenomenal oral history of the Second World War.

The World at War was first broadcast in 1973 and ever since then has stood as the benchmark for Second World War documentaries. Composed of archive footage (mostly black and white) and interviews with some of the eyewitnesses from both sides of the conflict, it avoids the annoying modern trend in documentaries of repetition and pointless and/or endless reconstructions that cannot capture meaning or emotion. It will never be bettered in the sense that it was made at a time when enough people were alive and well enough to be interviewed about events. It is also narrated by the excellent Oscar-winning Laurence Olivier, whose sparse narration has just the right level of sombre gravitas to provide a fitting frame for the events the documentary relates.
It's a very thorough, comprehensive series. There are twenty-six original episodes and this box set also includes eight special presentations and a three hour 30th Anniversary disc with includes previously unseen interviews and retrospective interviews with the original production team. All in all, this is an excellent documentary series regarding the Second World War. If you know nothing about this period it is an excellent introduction and overview of the conflict, and if you are aware it is highly interesting because of the sheer volume of archive footage and interviews which really help to convey the horror of the situation. Highly recommended.
Advantages: Many Key Witnesses Available for commentary Disadvantages: Very few stock images in colour.
The World at War Series is refreshingly unique, with the strong powerful voice of Laurence Olivier as Narrator, it offers an insight into both sides of the war, and best of all, alot of the key witnesses or participants of major events were still alive at the time of this documentary so a phenominal amount of commentary was available making this one of the most coverted History sets ever.
It even goes onto describe the end of the War in Germany, ...
