After seeing the musical Wicked on Broadway in New York, and asking my husband if he enjoyed it, he replied that it was good but he didn't have a clue what the hell was going on. I frowned and asked him if he'd seen The Wizard of Oz to which he replied 'er, no'. I could not believe it! As soon as we got home I pulled out the old and dusty video of the film and we began to watch it.
The Wizard of Oz begins in black and white picture with Dorothy, a young girl from Kansas, wishing that she could be anywhere but on her miserable farm with her aunt and uncle. When her wish is granted by whipping her, her dog Toto and their house, up in the midst of a tornado, it takes her and lands in the town of Oz. The screen is suddenly filled with bright colours that match the bubbly and happy atmosphere of Oz. The small and shrieky munchkins quickly surround Dorothy telling her that her house landed on top of the Wicked Witch of the East, killing her, and celebrations are now in full flow. But all Dorothy wants is to get back to her little home in Kansas and the Good Witch of the North guides her down the yellow brick road to the Emerald City, where the Wizard of Oz can help her get home.
Along the way Dorothy meets a Scarecrow who doesn't have a brain, the Tin Man, who has no heart, and the Lion who is without any courage. All wanting the Wizard of Oz to help them on their own quests, together they make their way to the Emerald City. But the Wicked Witch of the West wants her revenge on Dorothy for killing her sister and she'll stop at nothing to make sure she pays.
Made in 1939, this is a very old film but this doesn't make it any less enjoyable. When it begins it does seem extremely old fashioned with the black and white picture but as soon as it turns into colour the film takes on a more enjoyable and up-to-date feel. The musical has many well-known songs in including The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Follow the Yellow Brick Road, and Somewhere Over the Rainbow which you can't help but sing along to. There were quite a few bits that were quite silly and gave us a bit of a laugh such as the overemphasised acting.
With her role of Dorothy, Judy Garland was turned into a star and it won her a Juvenile Oscar award. Her performance really was wonderful and it is purely her character that keeps you watching with her big happy grin and sensitive nature.
It is quite a long film, lasting 101 minutes and may drag a little for some, but for children, even though not quite like today's kid's films, it is still a brilliant movie and will have children loving the magic of the land of Oz. For it's time, this is an extremely brilliant film and a wonderful classic that everyone should have seen.
