The wizard of oz is a great all around family film. But does it stand the test of time or does it get swept away by the demands of a more sophisticated audience. Let us remember that musical film has a specific target audience... while latter films such as moulin rouge and Chicago have been marketed towards a general audience. The wizard of oz falls into the trap of been a classical musical the narrative acts simply as a bridge between the different musical numbers. The narrative itself is a simple quest narrative... a journey home that any audience should be able to relate to from young to old. However the characters by their very design are fundamentally flawed. The film suffers from a lack of character development with the ending seeming forced and out of charcter.

I see you've posted this as a DVD review, but you've not mentioned the DVD features. Are there any extras? If so, what are they and are they any good? If you add to this, or if you change it to be posted as a "Film Only" review, which can be done by accessing "edit review" above the review and changing the drop down menu under the "Which format are you reviewing?" question at the bottom, please let me know and I'll re-rate.
