Judy Garland and her red shoes following the Yellow Brick Road? Can you remember the story, or do you just remember the film characters? Forget all those, and immerse yourself in this magnificent book. If you also have preconceptions about pop-up books, then forget those too. The original story was written by L Frank Baumand; this edition, created by Robert Sabuda, is a shorter version of the original story. The artwork, in the style of WW Denslow, the original artist, is exceptional, made up of prints created from cut blocks of linoleum. Open up the first page and find Dorothy, with her uncle Henry, a farmer, and his wife Aunt Em on their farm in the cyclone belt of Kansas, USA. Watch the cyclone approach and see the house and its surroundings before they are transported (found over the page) to a "country of marvellous beauty", the land of Oz. Meet the munchkins, hear about the Wicked Witch of the East and be there when Dorothy finds the magical silver shoes, and the Witch of the North, before undertaking her journey on the Yellow Brick Road to the Emerald City, accompanied by her dog Toto. Dorothy joins up with a scarecrow, finds a tin woodman, and a cowardly lion, and with them makes her way through a great forest. The Emerald City comes into view (more easily appreciated when seen through the green spectacles provided) and Dorothy discovers Oz, the Great and Terrible. The amazing story unfolds and the travellers continue in their quest to find the Wicked Witch. Further adventures ensue, featuring flying monkeys, yellow Winkie slaves, the demise of the Wicked Witch, and soon, until eventually, as in all good stories, there is a happy ending when Dorothy returns home safely. Recommend for children aged 6 years and over, this book is a modern take on a real classic, and it will make an excellent gift for book lovers everywhere.--Susan Naylor

high above by a skywriting witch: No movie ever imprinted itself on young imaginations or endured in adult memory more than MGM's classic 1939 musical, and no movie score ever hooked as forcefully into our collective cultural memory. This exemplary soundtrack finally treats this deserved classic to a thoughtful and comprehensive rendering that confirms the enduring power of Harold Arlen's original music and E.Y. "Yip" Harburg's lyrics. On film, the songs unreeled as a mixture of discrete songs and multi-themed medleys with frequent reprises, a presentation preserved here, epitomised in the "Munchkinland Musical Sequence". If not as concise as Bobby McFerrin's legendary, hilarious concert compression of the entire musical story, this telling of The Wizard of Oz relives the film just as vividly. "Over the Rainbow" is presented here with multiple alternate takes, making it a must for fans of Judy Garland. --Sam Sutherland

Advantages: A great classic given a good treatment Disadvantages: None really
...many people who wont know the story, have read the book, or have seen the film at some point in their lives. But just in case, I should probably just run through the plot anyway. Dorothy Gale lives with her Aunt and Uncle on a farm in Kansas. When the evil Miss Gulch threatens to have her little dog Toto destroyed after he bites her, Dorothy decides the only thing she can do is run away. When an old Travelling Gypsy warns her that her running away ... ...and witches. After killing the Witch of the east, she makes an enemy of her even more wicked sister Witch of the west. Instantly, Dorothy misses her aunt and uncle and the farm at home, and wishes she was back there. On the advice of the good witch, Glinda, she heads to the Emerald City for the help of the wonderful Wizard with her little dog Toto trotting all the way with her. On the way she befriends 3 strange creatures who are also in dire need ...

Advantages: The adorable performance of the unforgetable Judy Garland Disadvantages: Absolutely none!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Wizard Of Oz (1939) is now well over sixty years old, yet the classic film still stands extraordinarily well, reaching generation after generation (and has also become a firm T.V favourite at Christmas). Its transistion to the DVD format is thoroughly impeccable making the whole land of Oz look even more enduringly beautiful, colourful and extravagant, even for its film age. Theres no doubt that the sole ingredients of this timeless classic was ... ...eye-catching sets such as the dazzling Emerald City at the end of the yellow brick road to the wonderful dancing and fun, jolly, infectious songs. That yearning vulnreability that exists in us all somewhere is what the film so heavily and heartwarmingly draws upon. Judy Garland is totally adorable as the wide-eyed innocence of little Dorothy Gale, who is transported over the rainbow by a tornado into the magical world of Oz. The sequences of the ...

Quick review of The Wizard Of Oz (Special Edition) Review ofThe Wizard Of Oz (Special Edition)by
bexloui
The Wizard Of Oz is a well known family film. In short, it's about a young girl who ends up in a world where everything is not as it seem. On her rocky adventure to get back home, she makes some unforgetable friends such as the Scarecrow who wants a brain, the Tinman who wants a heart, and the Cowardly Lion who wants courage. There are many books connected with this story and even a westend musical, 'Wicked' which tells the other side of the story. Buying this film is a wonderful way to get into the world of Oz and a great starting point to explore it.
