In my opinion The Wedding Singer is a fabulous feel good film. I first watched this film back in 1999 when I purchased it on VHS. It was one of my favourite films and more recently I purchased this on DVD so I could watch it again.
The story of The Wedding Singer is based around two main characters. One of these is Robbie Hart who is the best wedding singer in town. He is happy, uplifting and always manages to save the day at weddings even when the best man makes a bit of an incriminating speech or when a teenager has a bit too much wedding champagne. Julia has just moved to the town to be closer to her fiancé Glen. She has got herself a job as a waitress with her cousin Holly at the hall where all the towns' weddings, birthdays etc get put on. This is the same hall where Robbie works. Julia and Robbie soon become friends but Robbie's good mood soon goes when his marriage to his fiancé Linda doesn't happen. Robbie turns from a happy go lucky guy into an angry and bitter man. This doesn't stop Julia trying to get him involved in her wedding planning, as he is the man in the know. Is Julia's fiancé as perfect as he seems? Will Robbie be happy again? You will have to watch to find out.
I think the storyline of this film is really nice. It is not deep or meaningful but it is a good romantic comedy style story. It is quite predictable as to what is going to happen but this doesn't take away from it. The fact I have watched this film many times and still enjoy is testament to this. The romantic part of this film is quite good and builds up nicely. It makes you feel a bit slushy inside even though it is very cheesy. It does have your typical happy ending. The comedy in this film is also really good. There are many laugh out load moments for me anyway. They put quite a lot of 80's jokes in it, so you would probably need to have been alive to understand these but they are clever if you do. They include references to do with the Rubix cube and Dallas getting shot. There is also a character called George who bares a very near resemblance to Boy George. His performance of the song 'Do you really want to hurt me' is very funny. The comedy is not really intelligent or clever but it is feel good and makes you laugh and most people would appreciate it.
The acting in the film is good as a whole. Adam Sandler plays the character of Robbie Hart and it is one of my favourite performances of his. He manages to play the two different sides very well from happy and positive Robbie to the angry man he becomes. When he plays the angry and bitter version, he makes this really funny by the shocking things he says and done. Also the way he plays this so seriously although it is obviously funny is great. Drew Barrymore plays Julia; she also plays this part well. The character of Julia is pretty happy and lighthearted throughout but does have some sadder moments. Drew makes Julia a likeable character who you hope gets what she wants. There are some other good characters including George who I mentioned previously. There is also Robbie's best friend Sammy who is a bit of a Fonzy wannabe. He thinks he is a ladies man but he is not very happy as we find out later. He makes a good sidekick to Robbie and adds a few laughs. Julia's cousin Holly is quite a good character as she makes Julia seem so much sweeter and innocent due to Holly's reputation.
The sound track for the film is great. I love 80's music, which is probably why I love this film so much. It includes songs from Do you really want to hurt me to Pass the Dutchie. Basically a lot of classics from the 80's that make the film even more enjoyable to watch. The songs are used well to help set the mood and also are used for comedic effect.
As you can tell I really love this film. It may not be Oscar worthy but it is a really enjoyable film that could lift anyone's mood.
The film is 97 Minutes long. It is rated a 12 due to some minor violence and swearing.

Advantages: Great music you can sing along too (if your old enough) Funny script with lots of romance thrown in too. Disadvantages: Well if you didn't like the 80's music, then this may not appeal to you. You might be shocked at the dress sense, lol.
