Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie's plot.
To be honest, I'm not all that big an Adam Sandler fan. I don't dislike him or his movies, I just don't seem to have seen very many. So I went into The Wedding Singer not knowing what to expect, I came out fairly satisfied.
The movie is set in a small town in America in 1985, where Robbie Hart (Adam Sandler - Happy Gilmore) is a well-respected Wedding Singer. He is well liked and set to get married to his sweetheart Linda (Angela Featherstone - the S-Mart girl in the US Army of Darkness ending!). At the last wedding before he his, he meets a new waitress Julia (Drew Barrymore - Charlie's Angels), the two hit it off right away, and Julia makes him promise to sing at her wedding.
However, at his wedding, he is stood up by Linda, who later tells him she isn't in love with him anymore. Going into depression, Robbie stays in bed for the next few days, before going back to work and ruining the first wedding he sings at.
Then we get to meet Julia's fiancée Glenn Gulia (Mathew Glave - Rock Star), a seller of bonds in the city. Robbie finds out that Glenn is cheating on her, but doesn't tell her because he doesn't want to spoil her happiness, but Julia is slowly falling out of love with Glenn and in with Robbie, however, when she comes to tell him this, she finds Linda, claiming to be his fiancée. Heartbroken, she tells Glenn to book a flight to Las Vegas so they can get married. However, Robbie catches wind of this and sets out to stop them.
While the movie is routine romantic tosh, it does have a few laughs to be had, but was nowhere near as funny as I was led to believe. This may have been because Adam Sandler is often associated with childish comedies so I was expecting one of those.
A sharp injection of comedy is brought in the unlikely form of former Generation X singer Billy Idol, who apparently hasn't aged since the 1970s. No, I'm not making this up, Billy Idol is absolutely hilarious, the brief amount of time he is in the movie is quite simply the funniest part and made me laugh more than I have in a while. Lets face it Billy, you wont ever come out of the shadow of Johnny Rotten or Joe Strummer, so you might as well take to comedy. This movie was heading for three stars until Idol showed up .
Other supporting cast members of note are Alexis Arquette (Bride of Chucky)as a Boy George wannabe George, who is Robbie's backing singer who only sings 'Do you really want to hurt me' by Culture Club. The sexy Christine Taylor (Zoolander)as Julia's slutty sister Holly and Adam Sandler regular Allen Covert (The Waterboy)as Sammy, Robbie's Fonz wannabe best friend.
All the acting is done well, with Sandler being likeable as Robbie and Glave is pretty hateable as the sleazy Don Johnson fan Glenn. Sandler and Barrymore also have some brilliant chemistry, but Drew is bound to be used to this romance stuff, seeing as she has made a career out of it.
The music is a nice little collection of 80s tracks, including Idol's White Wedding and Sandler covering Dead or Alive's You Spin me right round. Yes its terrible, but in a really comedy-cheesy-likeable way.
The Wedding singer is a fun little movie, even if it is a bit of a chick-flick. Don't expect anything-sidesplitting comedy wise, unless, like myself, you find Billy Idol funny. While you can guess the climax a mile away, how they reach the climax is a lot harder to predict ( well I sure as hell never thought Billy Idol would play a part in it) I would recommend this movie to anyone who really just wants a slightly amusing feel-good movie.

Great review. I really like this film. Love the Billy Idol bit and I think it's one of the better films Adam Sandler's done actually. Pretty good singer too. :O) xxx

I thought the film was much better than a 'chickflick'! but agree with you about all else.

When Billy Idol appeared I couldn't stop laughing...the best part of this film is the soundtrack

Advantages: Great music you can sing along too (if your old enough) Funny script with lots of romance thrown in too. Disadvantages: Well if you didn't like the 80's music, then this may not appeal to you. You might be shocked at the dress sense, lol.
