Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore star in this likeable romantic comedy which follows the usual Hollywood formula.
Set in the 1980’s, Sandler is Wedding Singer Robbie Hart, who falls for waitress Julia (Drew Barrymore) after himself being jilted at the altar, with the only problem that she herself is due to be married to her long-term partner in a few weeks time. If I said that her partner was a jerk and she falls for Sandler as well, and it decends into a will they, won’t they scenario, then you probably wouldn’t be too surprised, sniff contemptously at another Hollywood movie which copies loads which came before and never dream of watching it.
Well, this is exactly how it is, BUT, trust me, this movie is definitely worth watching.
Adam Sandler is his usual off-beat self here, but offers a much more mature performance in this movie, whilst belting out some great 80s tracks as the wedding singer character - not sounding too bad either, although there’s little chance of a career change here. Drew Barrymore puts in one of the best performances I have seen from her in a long time as well as looking strangely ‘foxy’ at times as well, although I had been on the red wine at the time of viewing and thats always a bad sign...Both are supported by a strong supporting cast of actors including Alexis Arquette as an over-emotional Boy George lookalike with a one-song repertoire (Do You Really Want To Hurt Me) and Billy Idol who puts in a cameo towards the end.
I like this movie a lot. There are some supremely funny moments in this movie and rather than just relying on a few laughs, it manages to retain a sense of fun throughout, balanced perfectly with the romantic storyline so that neither become too overpowering. Highlights include Sandler’s Cure-inspired love song, any scene with “George” and the performance of ‘Ladies Night’ by a rival wedding singer which is so amazingly cheezy you’ll laugh out loud.

Advantages: Great music you can sing along too (if your old enough) Funny script with lots of romance thrown in too. Disadvantages: Well if you didn't like the 80's music, then this may not appeal to you. You might be shocked at the dress sense, lol.
