A bit about me - I love the cinema. From the latest blockbuster (dragged along by my 15 year old son), to my preferred arthouse films, I just enjoy the experience.
Update (May 2005) - my son is 19 and at Uni now! How time flies...

This film is all about a cabaret singer, called Robbie Hart, played by Adam Sandler. And it really is all about him, in a very 80s, me-generation kind of way. Because of this, it helps if you either like the central character, or if you share the joke about him being a bit of a likeable loser.
The story, basically a romantic comedy, is all rather predictable, and gets even more so towards the end. Hart’s job as a wedding singer is seen as a sell-out, he’s put forward as someone whose school report probably said “could do better”. Nowadays he’d probably be seen as pretty successful, but then the real problem is that he doesn’t really like what he’s doing. A lot of the film centres around being miserable, and making do with second best, you know the kind of thing. There are plenty of jokes about the 80s, when it is set – complete with horrendous fashions and hairstyles. The soundtrack consists mainly of 80s songs too, and some of them are pretty dire songs, but they are actually given a new lease of life in this film. The version of “Do you really want to hurt me” (I liked Culture Club, so this isn’t one of the songs I’d class as dire) is pretty funny, too. There’s even a cameo performance from Billy Idol – it’s nice to see him working again. Oh, and I love the rapping granny scene.
I went to see this film because Steve Buscemi was listed in the cast, and I’d liked everything I’d seen with him (Fargo, Reservoir dogs) – but he’s hardly in “The Wedding Singer” at all, a sad waste of talent. Still, his appearance did liven things up a bit for me.
Overall, I guess this film was intended as a showpiece for Adam Sandler – no-one else really gets much of a look in. Drew Barrymore plays Robbie’s soulmate, the innocent Julia, and she’s great to watch, but to be honest isn’t really all that convincing in this role – this is probably down to the script rather than her acting.
If you like Sandler’s films, and if you have a soft spot for the 80s, you will no doubt enjoy this movie. If you see it as a nostalgic look at the worst excesses of the 80s, it’s fine. Otherwise, it’s extremely lightweight, and, overall, not as funny as it could have been – I found it a little dull, and the parts I did like or found funny wouldn't work on repeated viewing for me, so I don’t especially want to see it again.

I don''t really like this kind of film but I suppose that this is OK if you like this sort of thing. Very nice opinion though. Thanks.

I think if you like dam Sandler - you'll like the film, if not it's just fluff. I think he's been in funnier films - 'Happy Gilmore' for one, this is a more complete movie - but just like Jim Carrey's work - love him or find him irritating!

Advantages: Great music you can sing along too (if your old enough) Funny script with lots of romance thrown in too. Disadvantages: Well if you didn't like the 80's music, then this may not appeal to you. You might be shocked at the dress sense, lol.
