Uh Oh, Jennifer Lopez and Matthew McConaughey in a romantic comedy from the director of Bringing Down The House and A Walk To Remember? Its not that bad, honest!
--- Technical Stuff. --- Year: 2001. Cert: PG. Time Running: 99 Minutes. Director: Adam Shankman.
--- Cast. --- Mary Fiore - Jennifer Lopez. Steve Edison - Matthew McConaughey. Fran Donelly - Bridgette Wilson. Massimo Lenzetti - Justin Chambers. Salvatore Fiore - Alex Rocco. Penny Nicholson - Judy Greer.
--- DVD Details. --- - Making-of featurette. - Documentary - "The Dancer And The Cowboy" (The making of the tango dance scene.) - Deleted scenes. - Audio commentary by director Adam Shankman.
--- Plot. --- Mary Fiore is an ambitious, sleek, incredibly organized wedding planner. You'd expect her to lead a romantic life, but in reality every night she goes home to an empty apartment, tv dinners and The Antiques Roadshow. She spends her free time playing Scrabble at the day centre with her father and his two old buddies. When Mary is walking down the street one day and gets her Gucci heel stuck in a drain, she is more interested in saving her shoe than the runaway dumpster hurtling right towards her. Her life (and shoe) are saved by handsome doctor Steve Edison. They go out on a date that night, and after an open-air movie, dance and almost-kiss in the rain, Mary falls in
love with him. Unfortunately, a few days later, she is horrified to discover he's actually the groom in the current big-time wedding she's planning. Mary has alot banking on this wedding - if she nails it, she'll get made a partner in the company she works for. So she decides to go ahead with planning the wedding, pretending the date with Steve never happened, and hating him for leading her on. More complications are added in the form of Massimo, an Italian childhood friend who Mary's father has already decided that she should marry. Massimo turns up while Mary, Steve and his bride-to-be Fran are looking at wedding locations, and promptly announces that she's his fiance. After spending time alone with Steve, and a few lectures from her father, Mary decides to do the sensible thing and marry Massimo. While Steve and Fran's wedding is taking place, Mary's own wedding is happening just across town. I daren't tell you anymore incase I spoil the ending for anyone, but as usual in these films, it's a happy one.
--- Soundtrack. --- Surprisingly, only one song by J.Lo is on the soundtrack - Love Don't Cost A Thing. The songs that really stand out are Somewhere My Baby Waits For Me by Lisa Stansfield, I Honestly Love You by Olivia Newton John, We'll Find It by Sister Hazel, and Plan On Forever by Dana Glover. The songs are nice, romantic ballads which fit in well with the feel of the film.
--- Humour. --- Well, I guess you could say that the comedy part of this romantic comedy is somewhat lacking. Don't get me wrong, there are some funny moments - I had a good laugh at the scene where Steve castrates the statue of cupid then gets his hand stuck, the scene where Steve and Massimo "do the male bonding at the centre for physical fitness" and Judy Greer, as Mary's assisstant Penny is an excellent character with some funny scenes. I'll include some quotes, but I warn you it's funnier to watch than read.
Steve: I barely know you. I don't know your dad's first name, I don't know if you ever wore braces, or contacts, or glasses and I have no idea how you came to be a wedding planner, but I do know the curves of your face. And I know every fleck of gold in your eyes. I know that the night at the park was the best time I've ever had. Please say something. Mary: I'm a magnet for unavailable men!
Steve: Why did Steve go to the movies with you? Well, first of all, Steve likes the movies. Steve had the night off. Steve said, 'Hey, a movie sounds good,' plus he got an invitation. Mary: Why is Steve referring to himself in the third person? Steve: What are you talking about?
Mary: You know, "those who can't do, teach"? Well those who can't wed, plan.
Mary: You smell like sweet red plums and grilled chesse sandwiches.
--- My Opinion. --- Actors first. Jennifer Lopez. I actually really, really like J.Lo is this film. I didn't have much hope for it having seen the dreadfulness that is U-Turn and Out Of Sight, but in this one she plays a very likeable, believeable character. I think the fact we are shown her going home to her empty house and antiques shows on tv creates a realism that Jennifer Lopez doesn't have in real life. The character she plays - very organized, professional and ambitious, I get the impression that she's not totally unlike that in reality. As for Matthew McConaughey, he just does not 'fit' into this film! Now I love Matthew, I enjoy most of his films and he's a good actor. Here, he just comes across as creepy. When Steve starts referring to himself in the third person, I start thinking 'oh my god, I would not like to meet this guy on a dark night!' Oh, and Steve has a penchant for making strange noises!
The film itself is good if you like that kind of thing. Personally, I'm a sucker for romantic comedies. I like something that I can have a giggle at and don't have to think too much about. I first watched this on tv back in November, and I enjoyed it enough to go out and buy the DVD. It's a simple movie, as predictable as they come, but a sweet and entertaining enough way to waste an hour and a half if you have nothing better to do. Oh, and if you can put up with the fake Italian accents!
--- Pricing and Availability. --- I got the DVD in HMV for £7.99, they also had the VHS version for £6.49. Amazon.co.uk have the DVD fro £8.97, and the VHS for £5.99. I also remember seeing the VHS for £3.99 in Woolworths. Ebay, of course, have bargains as usual, and if you're not a complete DVD devotee, I'd recommend getting the VHS because the special features are just not worth it.
--- Taglines. --- - A romantic comedy about love, destiny and other events you just can't plan for. - His big day is her big problem.

I didn't like this film really but I must say I got a thing for Bridget Wilson-Sampras. I remember seeing her in Billy Madison. She is so hot!! Nice review by the way. --Chris--
