The Wedding Date begins by introducing us to Kat, a young woman living in New York City in a gorgeous apartment. Kat has been invited to her sister Amy's wedding in London, and she doesn't want to go alone...especially when she finds out that the best man is going to be her ex-fiance. So she decides to hire a male escort to act as her date for the duration of the wedding and festivities. Nick, the escort, is quite handsome and Kat is pleased with her choice. But once the parties begin, secrets are exposed, Kat has to face her ex-fiance Jeffrey again and one person threatens to ruin the whole wedding...
That plots sound like nothing I haven't seen before, and if that's what you're thinking, you'd be right. It isn't a ground-breaking film by any means, and sadly doesn't deliver too well on just being a light-hearted romantic chick-flick. Debra Messing takes on the role of Kat. I love her as Grace in the comedy sitcom Will And Grace, but sadly she doesn't shine in this movie anywhere near as much as she does in that show. As a leading lady, she doesn't seem to have the presence to hold the film together, and the show is stolen from her weak character in several scenes by other actresses, namely Amy Adams and Sarah Parish. Messing does her best with a poor script and story, but still it isn't enough to save the film.
The other actresses I mentioned however, were incredibly good, particularly Sarah Parish (of Cutting It fame) as Kat and Amy's British cousin TJ. She is loud, a bit rude and hilarious, and some of her one-liners (whilst shocking) are so funny, it's worth watching the film just for those. Parish clearly won a fantastic role here, and I'd love to see her expand her movie repetoire much further after this superb performance. Amy Adams plays Amy, Kat's sister and the bride-to-be. Amy is bitchy, loves to be the centre of attention, and is really the opposite of her sister. Adams and Messing have a great on-screen chemistry and really should have been in more scenes together, as they formed a strong presence together on screen and would have made the film much more enetertaining.
The male lead of escort Nick was played by Dermot Mulroney (My Best Friend's Wedding & Friends). He played the suave and confident Nick perfectly, with a hint of nonchalance about Kat and his feelings, and the all-American good looking man. The chemistry he had with Messing was good but nothing spectacular by any means. He does play the hard faced escort side of his character well, easily switching between nice man and money-making escort Nick seemlessly. Jack Davenport (This Life) plays Ed, the groom to be, a bumbling Englishman besotted wth his American bride to be, and finally Jeremy Sheffield (most famously in Natalie Imbruglia's music video for Torn) plays womaniser Jeffrey, a sleazy slimeball who can't seem to keep his thingy in his pants. He plays his part well, and especially towards the end really made me laugh!
However, there were a few things which really ruined the film for me. Firstly, the film didn't really delve deeply enough into the relationship of Kat and Nick. They didn't seem that close, and weren't exactly a match made in heaven. One minute they couldn't stand each other, the next it was an awkward kissing scene which just didn't wash with me. Secondly, the whole family situation with Kat was confusing. Apparently the girls were born in America, but raised in England, but still had strong American accents. A tad unbelievable and left me a bit confused, and thinking that the film didn't really know what it was doing. The film was primarily set in England, and like most American films tend to do, tried to portray that England is some quaint little country full of Tudor-esque buildings, lots of trees and that we live in the 1800's. Why they can't modernise our country and portray it accurately baffles me, especially if they are setting a film over here. It' the British cast which add the only realistic element to the England elements of the film, which for a British viewer is patronising and somewhat ridiculous. And the one of all? Why would Kat pay a whopping $6000 for an escort when she could have taken a male friend?! That's just silly money isn't it?!
So would I recommend it? Well, I wouldn't really recommend that you spend your hard earned cash on it to be honest, but if you enjoy a light-hearted easy watch then this might be for you. It was never going to win any awards, its an okay story which doesn't go further than it has to, with a quite average cast who don't really deliver to a great level. Sarah Parish steals the film for me, and is really the best thing about it. An okay film but still sadly quite average.

Advantages: comical elements Disadvantages: nothing extraordinary
...impressive or extraordinarily romantic in The Wedding Date, it is a movie which I would recommend for some light entertainment and just the right dash of romance. Starring Debra Mesisng and Dermot Mulroney, the plot is about a single woman who is invited to her parent's home for the wedding of her little sister. However, catastrophe arises when Kat (Mesisng) realizes that her ex fiancé would be attending the wedding too. Not wanting to lose face ... ...escort to accompany her to the wedding and pose as her boyfriend. The thing is, Nick is even more attractive than she anticipated... If you read my previous reviews, you will see that for me, the two most important elements in a movie remain the acting and the "feel good factor". Even if a movie does not have a happy ending, I still need that feel-good factor which tells me that I have just indulged in one of mankind's most popular form of diversion- ...

Advantages: Great Rom Com. Great characters. Disadvantages: It's quite cheesy.
In this movie, the lead role, Kat Ellis, is played by Debra Messing, who has also played Grace in Will and Grace on channel 4 and Living Tv. The charming escort Nick Mercer is played by Dermot Mulroney, who has appeared in a few episodes of friends, the movie About Schmidt and My best friends wedding. I think these actors create great chemistry between the two characters in this movie.

Advantages: very funny, with some great twists along the way Disadvantages: you end up wanting to slap the ex boyfriend
By the movie trailers, you could be mistaken for thinking this is a typical 'chick flick', but once you watch the film, you will find that it appeals to men as well due to teh humour involved. my husband loved the film, and has watched it two or three times now.
Debra Messing plays a great part(Kat), as the older sister preparing to attend the younger sisters wedding. her ex boyfriend is going to be the best man, and she wants to show him what he's ... ...the USA, while the wedding is to be at the family home in teh UK. unfortunately, Kat is single, and doesn't want to attend the wedding on her own, so she resorts to hring a male escort to accompany her.
the film gets of to a great start, and Kat doesn't get to meet her 'date' until she is on the plane. This is where you get to mee Dermot Mulroney as Nick, who is a date with looks and a sense of humour.
The film manages to show an aspect of life ...

...with someone, it will do the trick and leave you wanting more of what the film has to offer. Debra Messing is wonderful as Kat Ellis and I think we have all at some stage in our lives been in Kat's situation but not had the nerve to arrange an escort to accompany us. Debra and Dermot have a real chemistry that is almost sizzling. Mind you his is sizzling to look at anyway! They are accompanied by a wonderful British cast and it is so good to see ... ...the magic of what is truely going on. Debra Messing also gives a good commentary on the film in the features section which left me chuckling with my glass of wine.

Advantages: 2 of the best films, Adam Sandler, romantic comedy. Disadvantages: The films have to end!
Adam Sandler is one of my favourite actors and Drew Barrymore is one of my favourite actresses... so two films with them both in is brilliant!
STORYLINE
The Wedding Singer- This storyline has a romantic comedy take... all about how two different type of people get together no matter what.
Set in 1985, Robbie Hart is a wedding singer and Julia is a waitress.. both end up with the wrong people.. this storyline will keep you gripped guessing whether they will end up together or not.
50 First Dates- Another romantic comedy. A brilliant story about love overcoming all obstacles. Lucy (Barrymore) and Harry (Sandler) meet up in a diner and hit it off... when the next day arrives and Harry goes back to the diner to find that Lucy doesn't remember him no more.
Both films are funny and emotional... had me laughing and crying, thinking ...
Advantages: Two funny films in one Disadvantages: not two equally good films
Don't get me wrong, these are both funny films, and both worth seeing. I'm just not convinced they are both the kind of film you want to watch over and over again.
It is clear from The Wedding Singer that Sandler and Barrymore have great chemistry, sadly the fact that the plot of 50 First Dates relies on Barrymore having short term memory loss doesn't make the most of this chemistry.
In my opinion The Wedding Singer is undoubtably the better film. It is very funny. There are some great performances from the supporting cast which make the film very entertaining. The film is also peppered with some great eighties tunes! I have watched it again and again and I always enjoy it.
50 First Dates is good, it's just not great. It does have some very funny moments, but it is not as consistant as The Wedding SInger. If you are a fan ...

Kat Ellis's (Debra Messing) worst nightmare is about to come true. Not only is her younger, half-sister, Amy (Amy Adams), getting married before her, but to add insult to injury, the groom's (Jack Davenport) best man is Kat's ex-fiancee, Jeffrey (Jeremy Sheffield). Two years after being dumped, Kat is a single New Yorker and can't bear to attend the festivities at her parent's London home alone, so she does the next best thing: she hires an escort to play her boyfriend. Her rented date, Nick (Dermot Mulroney), fits the bill perfectly. He's handsome, intelligent, well spoken, intuitive, and a perfect gentleman - a virtual bargain at 6,000 dollars and the plan is to make Kat's ex sorry that he ever let her go. But the scheme takes a turn when Kat finds herself attracted to Nick, and the feeling seems to be mutual. But will their business arrangement stand in the way of a relationship... And just what is it that Kat's ex has been dying to tell her... Messing is endearing as Kat, who seems to be simultaneously bewildered and bemused by her situation. Mulroney, meanwhile, is at his most charming as Nick. Clare Kilner ('How To Deal') directs this romantic comedy set in London and the English countryside, which also features Holland Taylor as Kat's slightly overbearing mother and Peter Egan as her loving stepfather. Sarah Parish is a hoot as the sisters' bawdy British cousin.
