The Way We Were - North East Series 1 DVD

Advantages: Funny, good direction, excellent cast, good story
Disadvantages: Some may find some scenes disturbing

...but the brilliant cast manage to pull off some hilarious scenes that will make you laugh-out-loud. Most successful British films follow one of two "templates"; set up north on terraced streets or set in the Eastend of London. East is East and the Full Monty follow that first "template" and Lock stock, Gangster no.1 and Circus follow that second "template". The story unfolds quite slowly in East is East and when its finished you think "what actually happened in the film." Well I got that thought. Whether it was because of the ending has an unfinished feel to it or because nothing did actually happen I felt that nothing really happened in East is East. And nothing does really, except the children avoid an arranged marriage, have a few scraps with their father and well that's about it. ...I don't mind admitting that I love this country of ours, and one of the things I love most is the spectacular coastline that we are blessed with. It is no surprise then that when the Beeb produced the first series of Coast I was an ardent viewer. Of course when the trailers for the second series started showing I did wonder how they could follow up the first one, maybe do it all the other way round? Walk backwards? As it turned out I need not have worried, save for the fact that through work and other commitments I missed all but two programmes. So I was mighty pleased when a DVD of the second series appeared on Christmas morning. Advantages: Quite entertaining.Some good effects.

.... As long as it makes for a dramatic picture, who cares? The shear force of a Richter 10 or larger earthquake could possibly be felt clear across the continent of America. The Richter scale is a way of measuring earthquakes. We will have heard it mentioned on news programmes. But do we really understand what it means? Let's put that in some sort of perspective. The scale is logarithmic. That means that a 1 is ten times more powerful than a 0 and so on up the scale. So a Richter 6 is equivalent to a one megaton explosion. 1 mega ton is 1,000,000 metric tons of TNT. A Richter 10 is about 1,000,000 times larger, 1 Teraton or 1,000,000,000,000 metric tons of TNT. The Nagasaki nuclear bomb was only a Richter 5 or 32 kilotons and even the 2004 Indian ocean seaquake was a Richter 9 or 32 gigatons. By comparison Chernobyl was only Richter 3.5 or 178...
