I now have quite a few Korean made films in my collection, and I see Korea as starting to exceed when it comes to making martial arts movies. Where China tends to rely heavily on fancy wire work, glitzy special effects and fantasy elements to fighting, Korea seems to take a more mature approach relying on wholesome hard hitting, realistic fight scenes. The Warrior, Musa in Korea, is a period movie set in 14th century, that actually tells the story of China from a different view point, which is refreshing.
The film centres around a group of Korean diplomats protected by a band of Korean soldiers. However in the group is 3 main central characters. The main hero is Yeo-Sol, played by Jung Woo-Sung, Choi Jung, played by Joo Jin-Mo, an upper class, general, who is very incompetent, and bigoted, and finally Jin-Lip, a veteran sergeant, who all the men look up to. Yeo-Sol is a slave of one of the elderly diplomats. So this diplomatic envoy is on a mission of peace to see the Ming emperor. Upon arrival they are greeted by a very frosty reception, and are surrounded by Chinese soldiers. Sadly they are considered as spies and are arrested. Whilst being transported by prison wagons, the wagons are ambushed by Mongols that slay all the Chinese guards, but leave the Korean alive. However they are left to fend for themselves in a desert. They travel as best they can but inevitably with no water etc, some start to die. Yeo-Sol's master also dies but before he does he gives Yeo-Sol his freedom, and tells all the Koreans in the party that he is a free man. Eventually they happen upon some civilisation, and are saved but Yeo-Sol would not leave his masters corpse in the desert to the buzzards etc. Some strangers are offended by the smell and the sight of the corpse, and whilst Yeo-Sol is deterred them interfere with the body. Enraged Yeo-Sol takes his favourite weapon, a pole-arm with a very long blade and proceeds to kill all these men. This is where you discover the man can fight exceptionally well. Whilst they are at this encampment, Some Mongols arrive with a prison wagon off there own, only the captive is a beautiful Chinese princess. Very quickly The Koreans come up with a novel idea that if they save her they will be redeemed from their dishonour in failing their original mission.
Only things go awry when one of the Mongols escapes, The Koreans have the princess, but they also have a vastly bigger force now hot on their heels. But that is not all of their problems, all of the diplomats are dead and General Choi-Jung is in charge, not desirable. The general is a bumbling idiot and soon all of the men are rebelling. Not only that the General is getting feelings for the princess, but her affections are clearly for Yeo-Sol. Yeo-Sol and the general constantly lock horns and the general still sees him as nothing but a slave, and an adversary in is conquest for the princess. Only the sergeant can remotely maintain any slight semblance of control on the situation, but can it last? The Koreans problems just capitulate, but if they can get to a particular fortress before the Mongols get them, they will have reinforcements. Little do they know that there is no longer anybody at this fortress.
The film culminates into a climatic, battle not unlike that at the Alamo, centuries later in the Texas War of Independence, and an ending rarely seen in western made movies. The film addresses issues such as love, honour, social status, racism, and chivalry. Fantastic scenery, and epic fight scenes in this film, seek to plant a decent addition to any film collection. Like many of these epic Asian movies they are much better watched with subtitles, with the script as it was meant to be, the dubbed version is just total poppycock. The camera work is great as is all the acting, and there is nothing to complain about on the soundtrack. This film is in a similar scope as Bichunmoo {See my other review} but is more realistic, more earthy.
When i saw on the front cover that Zhang Ziyi was a leading character in the Warrior i thought "it must be good". Unfortunately the film was quite to the contrary. The battle scenes were outstanding and gory, but there's simply too much. This is the main focus of the film, not the plot.
The Warrior was just that. He killed everything with a pulse. There was little focus on the characters - their history, background etc. By the time you think you ... ...everyone dies, which was very depressing and not heoric.
I despised Zhang Ziyi's role as a spoilt and weak princess. I had little sympathy for her and found her pathetic. Such a waste of a very talented actress.
Too conclude this film was not defiant, inspirational or memorable. Big disappointment!!!!! ...

Advantages: Truly unique and inspirational film Disadvantages: Gets a little bit cheesy in some areas
for inner strength and the ability to simplify our lives. This is a film that gets to the heart of our weaknesses both as individuals and on a global level as a society. This film isn?t perfect, but in some ways its? imperfections only highlight the message of the film and its importance. It is a shame that The Peaceful Warrior doesn?t have the wider appeal of blockbuster films currently filling our cinemas and DVD libraries and will for the most part go relatively unnoticed because I think this is an important film which deserves and needs to be seen.

Advantages: If you were a fan of the Warrior, you need to own this Disadvantages: Pretty biased for a documentary
years later for a brief stint in rival organisation WCW before finally calling it a day and retiring.
As is common practice for retired wrestlers, WWE has put together a documentary charting his career. Normally such things tend to be a bit of a love fest, with past and present wrestlers and industry insiders gushing about how great the guy was to work with and how much he achieved in the ring. But with ongoing bad blood and Warrior refusing to participate in the DVD, it was obvious that this one was going to be something a bit different. And here we have it - The Self Destruction of the Ultimate Warrior.
What's interesting about this DVD isn't so much the retrospective insight it gives on the man himself, but rather the lengths Vince McMahon and the WWE will go to to try to get one over on him. It's no secret that Warrior was ...
Advantages: Not terrible - some good action Disadvantages: Patchy - unrewarding - slow
choreography and more dynamic camerawork emerging through the mid 90?s. 80?s action seems a step backwards from that, which tarnished my enjoyment of this movie some.
It?s not that the action isn?t rewarding in a cheesy A-Team kinda way. It?s just that the back of the tape blurbs this as ?action adventure? so I was looking forward to a bit of both. Sadly, the action is patchier than the patches the Warriors sport on their fetching brown leather waistcoat/vest thingies.
Considering there are 100,000 people after them, there is a pitiful dearth of memorable characters to pick off. Out of all the gangs encountered by The Warriors, only the Baseball Furies spring to mind immediately, with their baseball bats a-swinging and their faces a-painted. The best fight scene occurs when a swarm of Furies fall on a separated huddle of Warriors in a park ...
