As a young child it was a family ritual for me to sit on a Sunday and watch The walton's with my mum whilst she did the ironing!! For me buying the DVD box set was for sentimental and nostalgic reasons but I loved every minute watching the 25 episodes.
If you are not familiar with the series it was filmed in the 1970's and early 1980's and focused on an american family struggling to survive during the great depression. The pilot for the series called 'The Homecoming' is available on DVD too, though a lot of the main characters that featured in the original pilot changed. The idea behind it was to promote good honest family values and also good community spirit. Some might cringe at the though and yeah its true maybe it is a little too sweet but it is easy watching and quite innocent compared to most TV programmes or films which are saturated in violence, sex and bad language - don't get me wrong I am not a prude, but it is nice to watch something a bit more easy going every once in a while. Each episode usually focuses on a particular problem that a member of the family may face i.e. the mother getting polio or when a girl gets abandoned at their front door. etc
The main cast are as follows: mother Olivia (played by Michael Learned), father John (played by Ralph Waite) and the episodes are written through the eyes of the eldest son John-boy (played by Richard Thomas). There are six other children and the Walton gradparents. Further details can be obtained on various Walton's websites I am sure or on the product information.
The DVD boxset itself consists of 5 DVD's and 25 episodes each about 45-50 minutes long. I bought my box set for £24.99 from Play.Com though prices do vary considerably so look around before you buy.
Overall, its probably a series that most people have heard about though I think for viewing it may only appeal to limited audiences. Personally I love it though some people have already criticised me for parting with my money to buy it!! Worse still i am on the hunt for series 2 of 9!! It has its amusing moments mainly with gandpa and Grandma bickering and showing signs of what many years of marriage can do!! If you fancy a lazy afternoon in front of the TV watching something non-taxing then this is what you need! Enjoy.
For those who have offered comments about this review, I hereby include the following details regarding the DVD itself:- There are no dvd special features, it can be view in french and there is the option of episode selection. It is available as region 1 and region 2.
Regards
