Wow, I can't believe that tagline hasn't been used, yet!

The Village is the eagerly anticipated new film by modern master of horror and suspense, M Night Shyamalan. You may well be familiar with his previous fare since he became mega-huge with his sensational super-hit The Sixth Sense, followed by Unbreakable, and most recently, the Mel Gibson-starring alien invasion thriller Signs. Familiarity with these movies may well determine your chances of liking his new movie.

Sixth Sense had that killer twist ending that had audiences raving and reeling and revisiting the cinema to see how it was all done. His other films have suffered somewhat in relation to that twist, with eager fans wanting more of the same. Of course, Night is more than a one-trick pony and his films stand repeat watching due to great narrative depth and wonderful technique, but time and time again they seem to be unfairly judged based on their ending rather than on the whole experience. Well, a quick guide to help you decide whether or not you will enjoy this movie is what you thought of either/both his last two movies - if you still enjoyed them even though they didn't have as big twists as Sense then you will probably enjoy this. If you thought they sucked in comparison and are desperately hoping that Shyamalan returns to form with this one - don't bother going!

Not that this isn't a great movie, just that you will probably find the twist/ending a bit disappointing. If you're just looking for a good movie with lots of drama, romance, suspense and comedy (well, okay, maybe not the comedy - this is M Night Shyamalan we're talking about! - Although there are a couple of subtly funny moments) then this is your man. Or movie. It does move slowly but it is almost hypnotic in creating intrigue and interest and gripped my attention from start to finish. If you're expecting a thrill-a-minute horror ride - possibly based on the rather misleading trailer - then go and watch Aliens again. This is sophisticated suspense with lashings of intelligence. (Oops, sorry - that's a four-letter word in Hollywood!)

What to say about the plot of The Village? Here lies the difficulty. There are actually about four separate twists in the movie, possibly classified as two minor and two major, but I don't want to give any of them away. Some you will no doubt guess as the movie progresses - the signs are all there (pun slightly intended) but you will enjoy this movie more the less you know about it.

It begins with burial of a young boy in 1897. The community of which he was part is like one of those Amish communities you see today, self-separated from the evil towns and literally cut-off from the rest of society. They lead a simple life where family and friends are important and marriage ceremonies are excuses for the whole village to get together and enjoy the innocent group-dancing that these type of communities always seem to indulge in. No drunken fighting with the in-laws here! The only thing missing seems to be the strict religious sensibilities that we usually associate with this period.

The answer for that may well lie in the secret surrounding the village. You see, it is entirely surrounded by a dark, mysterious wood, full of creatures who seem to tolerate the villagers so long as their territory is not breached - they live in a kind of truce and there is a perimeter set up around the grounds which the young people are taught never to violate. When one of them, the quiet but impetuous Lucius Hunt (Joaquin Phoenix) dares to go further than the childhood Chicken-like game of standing on the border with their back to the forest for as long as they can stand it, with the strange snuffling noises and intermittent roars of rage of the wood creatures getting ever closer, and actually crosses into the woods, this seems to upset the delicate balance of (super-?) nature and suddenly livestock starts showing up, skinned but uneaten, and the beasts come into the village while the residents hide in their basements. The creatures mark the villagers doors with red stripes, the "bad colour", as a warning. Yellow is a good colour, which apparently wards off the evil beings.

Amongst this scene-setting we get to know some of the characters of the village. Edward Walker (William Hurt) appears to be a natural leader but he defers to the group of Elders who seem to form some sort of ruling Council for the community. Other members include Lucius's mother (Sigourney Weaver). Warner's daughter, Ivy (Howard), despite being blind is one of the most adventurous of the new generation and is in love with Lucius. They are both friends, as well as they can be, with Noah (Adrien Brody), who, and there's no kind way to say this, is the village idiot. The complicated relationships between these characters lead to the main events of the movie, as our hero has to set out on a perilous journey to save the one they love.

It's very difficult to convey the plot of the movie without giving it all away. The joy is in the little secrets that the director sets up then slowly reveals. The first twist comes about halfway through the movie and is entirely unexpected - suddenly the plot goes in a direction you didn't expect it to. This inexorably leads into the next revelation and then the next, building to an intriguing climax. Once everything is laid out before you, it all makes sense (despite the protestations of some critics!) although a second viewing would doubtless be rewarding.

This, I find, is one of Shyamalan's strengths, his ability to have you talking, if not arguing, about his films on the way out of the cinema! This is no different, and as I said, depending on your attitude going in you may feel that the big reveal is no biggie - and to be fair, it isn't really. Most observant viewers will at least consider the possibility, and I thought it was obvious from the first minute, but it's no big deal because the movie as a whole is not reliant on any one twist. (Even Sense, which arguably was dependant upon the payoff, stands up even when you know what's going on - and I guessed that twist early on, even though I'm not usually good at that sort of thing - I think I just think in a similar way to Night!)

It is a good story and most of the so-called plot holes I've seen other people moan about can be explained. If anything the tone of the movie is more important than the plot and here, surely, no-one can criticise. The stark shots with mooted colours, apart from the vibrant reds and yellows, helps to build a sort of colonial atmosphere which permeates the movie. The cinematography is effortlessly beautiful, the direction always interesting. The choice of shots and composition is always different. The pace is slow but never boring, information drip-fed to us rather than pushed down our throats. James Newton Howard's score is unobtrusive but lends a sense of grandeur, highlighting the key moments beautifully. The special effects are used sparingly but are authentic to the themes of the movie.

Shyamalan has drawn together an eclectic cast, some in rather underused roles, but it lends an element of class to the whole production to see such fine actors in supporting roles. The main surprise is perhaps that of Bryce Dallas Howard, daughter of the actor/director Ron Howard. Here making her big screen debut she grabs the part with a real sense of presence and charm; undoubtedly a performance that will lead to bigger things.

Is the movie scary? Occasionally, but that's not what it's about. It has a few real moments of suspense and action at appropriate times but it is more of a romance/drama with an element of mystery. I couldn't help thinking of the fairy tale Little Red Riding Hood, mixed with elements of his previous movie, Signs, and, inevitably, The Blair Witch Project, for the wood scenes, if nothing else. Shyamalan likes to suggest rather than show, and if you like those types of movie, The Others or The Ring might be other pointers, then you will probably enjoy this, taking into account my earlier warnings.

I absolutely loved the thing, but I would class myself as a big Shyamalan fan. If you didn't like his other movies then steer clear - there's nothing here that will grab your attention, although I feel you are the one missing out! Its themes of innocence and how far one can go to protect family, is as relevant now as it is in the setting of the movie.

I think the problem is people have still not yet realised that you don't watch Shyamalan films for the shocks and scares and plot, you watch it for the social commentary and cinematography. Not that the plot is poor in any way, but if people change their focus they will get a lot more out of the films.
