What else is there for me to say that hasn't already been said by just about every movie goer, film critic and magazine around. This film is without a doubt one of the most brilliantly constructed and executed films in cinematic history. Along with an excellent storyline and script, the direction by Brian Singer and the performances from an A-list cast provide so much energy and imagination to one of the most talked about and critically acclaimed films of all time.
Story : Following a huge explosion on a ship in San Pedro harbour, California. Us customs officer Dave Kujan ( Chazz Palminteri ) and FBI agent Jack Baer ( Giancarlo Esposito ) try to piece together what happened. Their only leads are a Hungarian mafioso and a limp conman named Roger " Verbal " Kint ( Kevin Spacey ). While agent Baer waits for the hungarian to describe the man responsible and have him drawn up by a police artist, Agent Kujan interrogates Verbal to find out what happened. Kint provides a gripping account to Kujan about what happened at the harbour and Kujan tries to fit the pieces together.
Kints story centres around a group of five master thieves who are all brought together in front of a police line up. In the stations cells one of the thiefs Michael McManus ( Stephen Baldwin ) tells of a job involving crooked cops who run an escort service for smugglers and other criminals. In order to cash in on this he persuades his friend Fred Fenster ( Benicio Del Toro ), Todd Hockney ( Kevin Pollak ) and Verbal Kint to help him pull off the job.
However the fifth suspect from the line out and the most important in terms of experience Dean Keaton is not convinced. Keaton ( Gabriel Byrne ) is trying to go straight in the restaurant business with his lawyer girlfriend Edie ( Suzy Amis ), and it takes verbal Kint to lay on the guilt trip and persuade him to get involved.
Keaton duly agrees and the job goes ahead, it is a success thanks to Kints plan and the thieves celebrate. Soon however they are drawn into another job in California, which goes horribly wrong. However its repercussions favour an infamous criminal who is a myth, a legend, and who is often reffered to as the Devil himself. His name is Kaizer Soze.
Kaizer's chief aide Mr Kobayashi ( Pete Postlethwaite ) provides the group with one final job, a ship belonging to a hungarian mafia is docked in San Pedro Harbour near L.A. On board is believed to be a shipment of cocaine worth $ 91 million dollars. The group are puzzled as to why they have been chosen, but it soon becomes clear. They have each stolen something from Mr Soze and by carrying out this job they will repay the debt they owe him.
What follows is a race against time as the artists impressions are almost complete and agent Kujan desperately attempts to learn the true identity of Kaizer Soze before he has to release the terrified Verbal from custody.
Cast : Verbal is played wonderfully by Kevin Spacey ( American Beauty, The life of David Gale ), his delivery and tone of voice coupled with his puppy dog expressions provide an air of uncertainty and fear that suits his character of a limp conman perfectly. Furthermore this provies a beautiful chemistry with that of Chazz Palminteri's agent Kujan and this provides much suspense and excitement throughout the film.
Michael McManus is played by Steve Baldwin ( Threesome ). His character is rather cocky and highly volatile yet rather dumb,he is also the weapon specialist. He is best friends with Fenster but dislikes Hockney. This makes his character even better as he is extremely unpredictable and violent throughout the film, and steve carries this through brilliantlly with a solid performance.
Benicio Del Toro ( Traffic, License to Kill ) is superb as Fred Fenster. On paper his character is very ordinary, but on screen he brings him to life. His offbeat performance and delivery of lines provided many funny moments throughout the film, most notably during the line up scene.
Dean Keaton is the serious member of the group and is portrayed by a moody and gripping performance from Gabriel Byrne ( End of days, stigmata ). Throughout the film Keatons intensity and angst provide great supsense and he works brilliantly as the mediator and teacher to the rest of the group.
Kevin Pollak ( End of Days ) plays Hockney, the lazy, greedy and highly witty thief who constantly annoys McManus. Pollak a comedian by trade uses all his skill to bring humour to his character and to the film as a whole. However in the more serious scenes his acting never looks out of place alongside the other characters, and this is a testament to his performance.
Chazz Palminteri ( analyse this, Down to earth ) is Agent Dave Kujan, his character is tough but has a gentle side. Chazz is brilliant as he tries to help verbal but gets continually frustrated at verbals reluctance to provide him with the identity of Soze.
Pete Postlethwaite ( The shipping news, Romeo and Juliet ) features only briefly but puts in a typically solid performance as Kobyashi.
Giancarlo Espsoito ( Ali ) also puts in a strong performance as FBI agent Jack Baer, he airs a sense of cool with his cigars and mannerisms. Throughout the film his performance is somewhat hurried and this provides even more suspense to the film.
Suzy Amis ( Titanic ) also appears briefly, and does not have enough screen time to put in a performance of any significance. Her character is very plain, however she carries this through with another good performance never the less.
Anything else : The tension between McManus and Hockney was aided by a backstage feud which occured when Pollak cracked a joke about how Steve is finally coming out from under the shadow of his brothers.
The line up scene was initially cast aside as it was deemed un proffessional due to the actors laughing following Baldwins and Del toro's reading of the lines. However after a number of takes Brian Singer decided to use it as it showed the groups more human side and provided the film with much amusement.
Each time the Kaizer soze scene on the boat was shot, Soze was played by each of the group to keep the audience guessing as to which one Soze was.
The film won two oscars in 1995 for Best original screen play and best supporting actor ( Kevin Spacey ).

To conclude this film has it all, suspense, humour, action and twists. The story is brought to life by excellent acting and a great script. The DVD is packed with many interesting extras which show how difficult it was to make this film. Overall a must have for every DVD collection and priced in most places at £7.97, this is an absolute bargain.
Advantages: Excellent thriller, great performances Disadvantages: None for me
...on a boat, one of the few survivors, a cripple known as Verbal, is forced by the police to tell them what happened. His story starts a few weeks before. A truck is hijacked in New York, and, because of a lack of suspects, the police round up five career criminals, including Verbal, who could have been involved, but weren't. As revenge, they decide to carry out a heist against the police, who have been running an illegal taxi service. However, the ... ...what is Soze's plan for the men? And is Verbal going to live the rest of his life in fear of him? Verbal is played by Kevin Spacey in what I think is easily his best performance. Spacey has the ability to be suave and good-looking, creepy or a total innocent, depending on what role he takes on. Here, he borders on the innocent, for all he's a career criminal, and it is easy to feel sympathy for him. Nevertheless, there is a streak of iron in there ...

Advantages: Superb character acting and hard boiled dialogue Disadvantages: People will try to spoil this film for you by telling you the ending!
WHAT IS IT: The Usual Suspects is a crime thriller written by Christopher MacQuarrie and directed by Brian Singer. I don't want to give away too much of the plot as the less you know, the more you'll enjoy the film and its many twists, bluffs and double bluffs. It follows the story of five criminals who meet at a police line up and subsequently decide to work together on a heist. They plan to target corrupt NYPD cops who have a slick operation in ... ...They then get involved with the network surrounding this operation and are soon in over their heads. The story is told to a police officer, Agent Kujan, by Verbal Kint a weedy con man who seems to suffer from a serious case of verbal diarrhoea. The film stars Kevin Spacey, Gabriel Byrne, Stephen Baldwin and Benicio Del Toro. GOOD POINTS: It is a brilliant neo-noir thriller. The plot is extremely engaging as it twists and turns and you genuinely never ...

...a film with one of the most ingenious storylines and finales, not just in a few years, but in cinematic history.

...of novels of this genre. The main specialty of this movie is that it is really difficult to find who the culprit is... ( Maybe if you find it, you are good)... The movie goes on like this :- The movie moves around these important characters: 1. Dean Keaton (Gabriel Byrne) --> ex-cop-turned-crook who's known for his nerves of iron; 2. Michael McManus (Stephen Baldwin)-->a psycho entry man; 3. Todd Hockney (Kevin Pollak), a hardware specialist with ... ...===My verdict=== As the movie opens, these five are being bundled to form the backbone of the movie. The movie contains the story told by Klint to Kujan. As the narrative progresses, the movie constantly raises the stakes. The audience is only slowly let into the story -- at the beginning, everyone on-screen knows more than we do. Gradually, however, the plot devices is untangled by the switches back and forth between present and past. This film ...

it reached our shores, so we were trying to guess the ending before the film started – unfortunately we were right! For an outstanding and memorable twist, you would find difficult to see coming, check out Willis’ previous work in “Twelve Monkeys” or the excellent “The UsualSuspects”.
The VHS version of this film comes as either normal or specialedition. Apparently the specialedition and the DVD include an extra 24 minutes of footage, previously unseen.
My main worry with this opinion is that people who enjoyed the film will rate this opinion badly. Please try and see it from my point of view, I guessed the twist and as a result I didn’t enjoy the film. ...

DVD Description
Director Bryan Singer's labyrinthine crime drama centers on five career criminals (played by Gabriel Byrne, Kevin Spacey, Benicio Del Toro, Kevin Pollak, and Stephen Baldwin) who meet after being rounded up for a standard police line-up. Upon their release, the men band together to pull off an intricate heist involving $3 million worth of emeralds. Their success brings them to the attention of the enigmatic Keyser Soze, an unseen, nefarious, and mythic underworld crime figure who coerces them into pulling off an important and highly dangerous job. The scenes that follow make THE USUAL SUSPECTS one of the most fascinating crime thrillers in cinema history. Working from the Oscar-winning screenplay by Christopher McQuarrie, Singer adroitly tells the complex story through flashbacks, cross-cutting, and voice-over narration. Such nimble handling of the intricacies of the nonlinear narrative adds to the suspense, leaving viewers on the edge of their seats until the clever, satisfying finale. Singer's expertise in the technical aspects of filmmaking--his use of a dioptic filter to keep two close-up faces in focus, as well as his inventive use of six-frame step printing--helped him earn his reputation as a visually impressive and stylish director. Filled with excellent performances from veteran actors (Kevin Spacey won his first Academy Award for his breakthrough role as Verbal Kint), THE USUAL SUSPECTS placed Singer squarely on the cinematic map.
