Abby, the uptight and controlling producer of a TV talk show, has just been assigned a new presenter on the show - the male chauvinistic Mike. But while Abby tries to get him booted off the show, the TV ratings soar, due to Mike's brutal yet honest relationship advice. When Abby has difficulty in finding the perfect man, Mike offers to help and she reluctantly agrees. With his advice in flirting techniques, choice of underwear and sexy ways to eat a hot dog, Abby attempts to pull Mr Perfect, under the strict instructions to do everything Mike says. But while he primps and preps her and his theories and advice seem to be working, the womanising Mike finds himself falling for his protégée.

~ Cast ~
Abby - Katherine Heigl
Mike - Gerard Butler
Colin - Eric Winter
Georgia - Cheryl Hines
Larry - John Michael Higgins
Joy - Bree Turner

The two main actors, Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler were each brilliant in their individual roles. Heigl played the uptight control-freak perfectly, looking down her nose at the lowly Mike, not really knowing anything else apart from her work and taking a list of questions and answers on every date. However, underneath her sensible and smart personality she is actually just an ordinary girl who is cute, clumsy and witty and does a little dance every time she's happy, which makes it impossible not to like her. Mike is the complete opposite being a very confident and crude womaniser relating every sentence to sex and being completely blunt about what both sexes want. You can see why so many women find themselves falling at his feet, with his self-assured, cocky attitude and rugged good looks.

They had brilliant chemistry together - at the beginning of the film Abby dislikes Mike and her performance showed real disgust and loathing. But, as they become closer, their friendship blossoms and subtle flirting begins, you start to see real feelings for each other creeping in.

Admittedly, the film is a little predictable and anyone with half a brain can see that something will end up happening between Abby and Mike, but this doesn't make it any less enjoyable. It is full of witty humour and so many things had me laughing out loud, mostly coming from the straight-talking Mike.

It may be a little crude for those who are quite prudish as it contains lots of blunt and sexually explicit conversations about male and female feelings and actions towards the opposite sex but it is only speaking the truth which, as it says in the title, is ugly. A mild masturbation scene is also in the film but it is done in such a great way that this is nothing but funny and the whole cinema was in fits of laughter at the embarrassing way in which it happened.

This is a brilliant film in every way - the two main actors and the rapport between them, the blatant honesty of the film, and the hilarious script and acting it provided. This is the best rom-com I've seen in quite a while and isn't just a girly one as we get all the male views on women and sex and it is just as funny and entertaining to men as it would be to us girls. I enjoyed it so much, in fact, that I'm going to see it for a second time next week!
