I was reading the work of one of the finest British historic novelists, regarding Henry VIII's six marriages when I heard about the TV series itself. I purchased the DVD immediately and watched the first part, season one, over and over again. For me it was a unique sensation, like travelling back in time.
The locations, the costumes, the lively, natural acting are at least astonishing. I enjoyed the high quality of the images and the exceptional soundtrack as well. Everything is perfectly done, so that the viewer actually experiences and feels at the same time with the characters.
The series starts with King Henry's youth. Jonathan Rhys Meyers was the perfect choice for the king's character, because historically speaking, Henry VIII was indeed until his late 30s a prototype of male beauty. He is a young, dashing king, who's married to Catherine of Aragon, the daughter of Isabela of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragon, six years his senior. The film gradually shows how the king's lack of attraction and affection towards his wife turn into an obsessive passion for her lady in waiting, Anne Boleyn.
Historic, at times esoteric detail is risen to the rank of virtue in this extraordinarely well learned and documented script. I cannot express in words how much I enjoyed watching this over and over again.
The whole world turns around one man, King Henry VIII of England and Northern France, for France was partly English occupied then. I highly recommend it to everyone with interest in universal history. It's absolutely thrilling to see how the kings character evolves through the years.
I especially liked Henry Cavill as Henry's best friend, Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk, who was known to be a beautiful, seductive man, who, in his youth, never kept his hands away from any woman he liked; and then there is Natalie Dormer as the tempestuous, smart and persistent Anne Boleyn. Of course the series follows the political events of the time and hereby the lifes, risings, fallings and deaths of Henry's andvisors, ministers and enemies, but Rhys Meyers, Cavill and Dormer actually manage to bring the historic characters back to life.
If you look at a portrait of the young Anne Boleyn and then see Natalie Dormer doing her character you will be at least surprised.
The Tudors is an absolute must see, not only for the perfect decors, costumes, locations and so on, but for the better understanding of history and why not, at the same time for the better understanding of human nature.
