Truman Burbank (Jim Carrey) is a man who has grown up in, and is now living his life unawares, within a reality TV programme. Hand chosen from five unwanted babies, he is legally adopted by the television company. Truman is then placed in the specially constructed set ready for the unveiling of the groundbreaking reality show. Killing his father off within the programme by a 'staged' boating accident ensures Truman's fear of water and therefore leaving him no option for escape should he discover the truth behind his scripted life, as the only way out of the town is by crossing the sea. The whole history of the programme which has charted Truman's birth, childhood and progression to manhood is shown globally 24/07. Functioning within this structured reality, the world watches on. Within the programme he lives a typical mundane existence, unaware of the cameras which follow every move he makes.
Truman Burbank is a happily married man with a steady job in a local office, which again is a total sham, as the wife is in fact an actress provided by the TV Company. As are the towns population, who are the 'Extras' in effect. The whole cast involved in the entire production of the Truman show are all actors and Truman is the only 'real' person existing within his manufactured life. Set in the fictional town of Seahaven, Truman is a model citizen and a regular 'all American guy'. The whole town loves Burbank and they all wave to him on his way to work. The 'Truman show' is major and the network make a lot of money off the back of it. The reality TV programme is headed by a fanatical boss who sees it as his brainchild and he is overly possessive with every aspect of it. America loves Truman and the citizens tune in at all hours to see what he is up to. The show has become a National institution. But there is something just too perfect about his existence, too routine, too clockwork, and something happens one day which makes Truman question the very origins of his whole existence.-
I love this film; it struck a chord with me. The story is just so original. I loved the whole concept of it, and of course quite predictive in the whole reality TV thing. Drawing on George Orwells 1984 possibly, the Big Brother theme was well ahead of it's time in relation to the whole televised aspect. I thought Jim Carey was a perfect choice for the part and I felt real sympathy for him as the hoodwinked and gullible Truman. On a parallel with the character of Forest Gump as the dumb man controlled by the media I thought Jim Carrey gave a fine dramatic performance in a film which was somewhat disturbing in its context. It is a really thought provoking film on so many levels. The meaning of life, the media hypocrisy, the natural inbuilt trust of fellow man; the questioning of God as a force. The Truman Show highlights the power of the media. By effect the viewer's lives are enriched and controlled by Truman's life which is an interesting way of looking at the brainwashing aspects of selling and the media.
The Truman show is a film that will appeal to a diverse audience on many levels. As we get into the film you begin to really care about Truman and want him to escape his insular existence. Having no-one that really cares for him makes him seem so alone and vulnerable. I thought Jim Carey was outstanding in the role of Truman. He virtually carried the film and I can't think of another actor who would have been so perfect in the role. He played it with a real sincerity leaving his natural comic instincts at home. Others were considered for the role, Robin Williams for one, who I think would have been so wrong. He would have been playing for laughs the whole way through. Jim Carey is a master of the adlib and he was allowed to do just this within the film and which brought some great moments. Also Ed Harris was brilliant in his portrayal of the creator of the Truman Show. You are never quite sure if he feels any compassion for the character of Truman or in fact sees him as a monster that he has created and therefore ultimately will need to destroy.
The soundtrack is fantastic with use of classical music prominently the works of Frederic Chopin, and original work from Burkhard Dallwitz and Philip Glass. This is a clever little film which embodies many issues. With the running time being short though, it doesn't really allow us but to scratch the surface of all of them. I came away from The Truman Show very reflective. There were definitely a lot of messages being pitched at us throughout the film and I was left pondering as to what sort of film I had just viewed. Truman Show is a drama, but it also has some comedy to it. I like the use of the 60's theme where everything looked picture postcard perfect in colouring and visuals. I know that the art of Norman Rockwell was studied as a blueprint for the look and backdrop of the film. I was also very impressed with the cinematography with its use of silent-era cinematic technique in making the centre of the image sharper and more prominent that the periphery of the frame. A technique used at the time in commercial filming when someone leans into the lens with eyes wide. The message that Weir was trying to put across with this was that everything and everybody "Is for sale!"
This is definitely a very clever and thought provoking film and one that in my opinion is definitely worth viewing. -
"The Truman Show has been analysed as a thesis on Christianity, simulated reality and existentialism. Many have noted the film predicted the rise of reality television".

Wouldn't it have been better however if they were totally unaware of the cameras as they went about their daily business as usual, that for me would have been more interesting. Advantages: Some appeal for everyone Disadvantages: Not real enough to replace reality TV
It's funny how sometimes the smallest things stick in your memory. I can still, all these years on, remember the first time I saw "The Truman Show". It was with my mother and we were at the cinema at Lakeside in West Thurrock. I don't remember the date, or even why we'd gone to Lakeside in the first place, but I remember we decided to see a film on a whim, and this was our eventual choice. I suspect part of the reason I remember is because in all ... ...at the cinema with only my mother for company. The other was "E. T.", and I remember that we were alone for that one as my brother had come down with tonsillitis and my dad had to stay home with him.
Truman Burbank is the star of "The Truman Show", which is essentially a larger scale version of "Big Brother". When the film was first released, though, we didn't know this, as reality TV wasn't as big as it was, and Big Brother was still only a figment ...

...his lips when he received the script for 1998's hit reality-drama, The Truman Show. So often cast in wildly unflattering roles, many had forgotten that he could apply himself to a demanding lead requiring more than a series of over-the-top rough and tumble gags. Carrey spent much of the 90's as the prince of Slapstick. If you took the combined IQ of the characters that he portrayed in that time, you'd be struggling to reach double figures. But make ... ...he does, in one of the most understated movies of his career.
When i watch a Jim Carrey movie, i always ask myself the same question. Was this written with his lead in mind? Carrey has a knack of taking his characters and amping the outrage to levels which simply aren't attainable by other slapstick comedians on the scene. The sheer catalogue of facial expressions, hysterical reactions and animal noises in his repertoire put him on a plain of his ...

Advantages: Gorgeous visuals, solid acting, good story, Elfman soundtrack Disadvantages: Not on DVD yet
Most people are familiar with the combined madness and genius that is Tim Burton's movies. If you have not seen Edward Scissorhands, then you are missing the best example of his work. Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder are perfect in their roles, and help drive the emotion that runs through the movie. The visuals are Burton at his best - dark, imaginative, and twisted. I feel the movie combines Burton's typical style with the black humour of films like Pleasantville and TrumanShow. This is the sort of movie that you would be best to buy on DVD, if only to appreciate the stunning visuals, and Danny Elfman's brilliant (as always) soundtrack. The 10th anniversary disc comes out in September - I can't wait! ...
Advantages: Inoffensive and entertaining Disadvantages: It's a popcorn movie with no substance
Did you like the TrumanShow?
If so you will probably like Pleasantville or at least be familiar with the ?feel? of the film, in fact I think you?ll recognise a large chunk of the soundtrack.
The plot is simple. Two hip(ish) mineties teenagers find themselves living in a 50?s soap where all the characters are black and white and squeaky clean. During the course of the film the pair teach the community to enjoy and explore life (?or corrupt them, depending on your standpoint) until they escape and return to their own reality.
Not as good as the TrumanShow but inoffensive none the less. Probably better to rent than buy.

The life of Truman Burbank has been broadcast around the world with tremendous success since the day he was born. A star for the mere fact that he exists, Truman has no idea that there are cameras in every corner of his world.
