The Eiffel Tower was erected to last no longer than 20 years after the World Fair of 1889. ... more
But how was it actually built, who built it and how did it become the most popular and instantly recognisable building in the world?1884. The workshops of the internationally renowned engineer Gustave Eiffel are bristling with anticipation. There is already talk of the 1889 World Fair and the grand celebrations to mark the centenary of the French Revolution. Eiffel plans to stand out once again as the representative of France. Then an idea comes from one of his partners. They should turn their most recent bridge design skywards and built a vast tower that will take Europe, the US and the world by storm.By using the detailed day by accounts left by the people who worked on construction, The True Legend Of The Eiffel Tower tells the fascinating story of the genius behind its creator, his vision and how this truly epic undertaking took shape and stunned the entire world. This stunning docu-drama ingeniously blends archive footage, CGI, factual accounts and dramatic reconstructions to deliver a fascinating portrait of Gustave Eiffel and his monumental project to build the world's most visited landmark.
Advantages: cheap to visit, great views of paris, one of the most popular attractions Disadvantages: lengthy queues
If you visit Paris its almost rude not to go up the Eiffeltower. Those of you who have read my other reviews on Paris will know I went there last summer for a few days??and yes I did venture up the Eiffeltower.
History:
The Eiffeltower was built by the contractor Gustave Eiffel in 1889 and is 118 years old. It took only two years two months and five days to build, which is quite remarkable considering the height of the tower, the weight of the metalwork used and the fact that it was only 1889! There is an exhibition marking the building work of the tower on one of the levels and this is well worth a look, although I can't remember which level it is on.
My opinion:
I thought it was great and really good value for money, however it has since been named top of the list in a poll of the worlds most disappointing tourist spots ...
Advantages: Close to the Eiffel Tower, clean and not bad prices Disadvantages: No tea or coffee facilities in the room.
On my recent trip to Paris I saw a lot of hotels - the first one was the Tour Eiffel Suffren. This hotel is a 4 star hotel and is part of the Mercure chain of hotels.
The hotel:
The hotel is classed as a 4 star hotel but, is not a luxury style hotel compared to others of the same rating within Paris city centre. The hotel has plenty of facilities which I'll go through later and is quite large with 405 rooms.
Location:
The hotel is one of the closest to the EiffelTower and from the front entrance there is a smashing view of the tower. Some of the rooms also have a view of the tower but unfortunately I was not lucky enough to have one of those ones! The hotel is located at 20 Rue Jean Rey and is actually located right next door to the Hilton Paris hotel. Officially in the 15th Arondissemont it is located on the left bank ...
Advantages: Amazing Views, great experience Disadvantages: A little pricy, can be very busy.
I suppose it would seem hard to write a decent review about a landmark that is so well documented and features in just about every movie filmed in France ever.
i know that you will have seen pictures of it and perhaps seen one of the many movies: View to a kill, Le Divorce etc and I am sure that you have really grasped the true size of the thing. It is absolutely emormous and seems to climb for ever.
We visited it on the 21st of June 2006. We got their via the Metro and the RER (larger trains that the metro). Basically we were walking on the street that has the Tower on it, but we could not see it at all. Initially you have to look up into the sky to see it as there are lots of trees around it.
I could not fathom the size of the tower and I felt daunted at the prospect of going up to the top.
The price was OK, but if you ...
