The Transporter is the first in the trilogy of brilliant action movies starring Jason Statham, The Transporter is followed Transporter 2 (2005 ) & the aptly named Transporter 3 (2008) which I am yet to see. However I?m here to talk about the film that started it all, The Transporter was released 2nd October 2002 & was greeted with a mixed reception from the critics, the film had an average of a 53% rating which means just over half of the critics liked it. One thing that I read about the reception is that one critic remarked that it had too much action? it?s an action film what do you expect?! Most people will moan when there?s not enough now there?s people moaning that there?s too much!
Despite it?s average reception the film did quite well at the box office, grossing an estimated $43,928,932 on a budget of $20,900,000. The Transporter is rated a 15 which is to be expected & it runs for approximately 94 minutes.
The Transporter is directed by Louis Leterrier & Corey Yuen. Louis Leterrier is most famous for directing this film, the first sequel & Fearless, a martial
arts film starring Jet Li & Morgan Freeman. Corey Yuen, the more well known of the two is great friends with martial arts legend Jackie Chan. He?s considered to be one of the top action directors in the business & with using this film as an example I can see why. He?s also worked on; Game Of Death II starring Bruce Lee which was released after his death, Hero & DOA: Dead Or Alive.
As I mentioned earlier this film features Jason Statham, I?ve got to say that I really like Jason Statham he?s a really good actor but besides that there?s something really sexy about him! He?s featured in films such as; The Bank Job, Death Race, War, Snatch & The Italian Job. Jason Statham started off as a world champion diver (how random is that) which explains the body, he was also a model. His breakthrough into films came when he met Guy Ritchie by chance & he ended up casting him in his film Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels which was a huge success in 1998.
The Transporter revolves around Frank Martin, an ex special forces operative who now works as a transporter, delivering anything & everything on time with exact precision, no questions asked. Frank is offers a job which he accepts, the package is put into the boot of his car & he sets off on his way to deliver it. Frank is very meticulous with his job & always follows some simple rules, one of which is to never look in the package. When Frank hears numerous disturbances coming from the boot of his car curiosity gets the better of him & as soon as he opens the package he immediately wishes he hadn?t.
I personally love this film, it?s not something that I was expecting to like but caught it on TV one night by chance, it had already been on a while but it immediately caught my attention & I ended up watching right through to the end which is unusual for me as I?m one of those people that can?t miss the beginnings of films! Upon seeing this for the first time I had heard of Jason Statham but wasn?t too familiar with him, I was extremely impressed with his performance in this film, granted there isn?t too much acting in it but the action & hand to hand combat scenes were fantastic & I was immediately gripped. After watching this I looked for it on the internet & found it cheap so ordered it & when it arrived I watched it all the way through with my Dad as it?s more his kind of film that mine & he too was really impressed with it.
The story with this isn?t too strong but that isn?t really the main appeal of this film & to my surprise neither is seeing Jason Statham with his shirt off! If you want a really strong storyline that you can be gripped by then this sadly isn?t the film for you, if you want an all out action movie that doesn?t slow for one minute then this is definitely the film for you. This does actually have a decent story to it, with so many films like this the stories are very weak & they rely on the action alone to keep people interested but this actually has a good storyline & in some ways it can be quite controversial as it?s about a touchy subject that was handled well. It also sheds light on something that I & I?m sure a lot of other people weren?t aware was still going on, yes this movie is just a movie & not based on truth but the plot line is good.
If you?re someone that?s into action films then I would highly recommend this, if you?re a fan of Jason Statham as I am then I would also recommend this. This is one of his best films to date & I?m really looking forward to seeing the third instalment of this film when it?s released on DVD next month.
One thing that I noticed upon buying this DVD is the lack of special features, there?s only three on there which to some people I?m sure will be disappointing however I didn?t buy it solely for the bonus features so that kind of thing doesn?t really bother me too much. The DVD includes; Audio Commentary Making- Of Featurette Extended Fight Sequences
The Transporter is currently available from play.com for £4.99 which is a brilliant price.

I'm sorry for the H, but for this to be a full DVD review, I would prefer to see a review of the extras in the same detail as your review of the film, not just a list of them.
