Directors: Louis Leterrier and Corey Yuen Producers: Luc Besson, Steve Chasman and David Lai. Writers: Luc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen Stars: Jason Statham, Shu Qi, Matt Schulze and Francois Berleand.
Released in late 2002 this movie is about a man who offers his services as a transporter of anything, if the money's right.
*BRIEF PLOT*
Frank Martin, (played by Jason Statham) is a delivery driver, only the packages he delivers are not your usual packages, they consists of anything from drugs to people. He is such a perfectionist at his job that he constructs his 'getaway' vehicles specially for each delivery, with some brilliantly dangerous consequences and even has rules which he religiously sticks to… With Frank living in France he is finding his 'delivery' job becoming a little harder as he is under the constant observation of Inspector Tarconi, (played by Francois Berleand)… who is convinced Frank is up to no good…
The trouble really starts for Frank when he collects a package which he has to transport to Darren Bettencourt, (played by Matt Schulze), a rather insane man who has other plans for the delivery man… only for Frank to have other ideas, seeking revenge against his new enemy… only to end up with a new and rather unexpected ally in the shape of Lai, (played by Shu Qi), as he tracks down Bettencourt , discovering that Bettencourt's plans are more sinister than first thought, involving many gun battles and even more fight sequences.
So as Frank becomes personally involved in disrupting Bettencourt's plan, neglecting his four golden rules, his life, and unusual career take a twist and a very large turn… right until the very end and beyond.
* IN CONCLUSION *
This is a pretty good action packed movie right from the start as Franks 'job' is revealed to the audience in the form of a Black BMW and a over sized team of bank robbers. The story is well written and has many action scenes which fit together very well indeed, almost like a finely tuned engine, (albeit more a ford fiesta than an Austin Martin, but still…well worth taking for a test drive), and it has a fantastic bit of a twist regarding the hardman of the delivery world.
The all round acting is brilliant, with Jason Statham playing his role as the Transporter to perfection, using his calm expression and coolness in a crisis attitude to bring out such a stunning performance…although the man of the match award for insane characteristics has to go to Matt Schulze for his performance as the totally mad and rather sinister Bettencourt.
As for the entertainment value, well, what can I say… this is one of them movies which will keep the viewer thrilled from start to finish, with many splendid stunts, although sometimes a little over the top in parts… and some rather fantastic fight sequences, including some exceptionally well choreographed scenes on a bus and in a container yard… almost as entertaining as watching Jackie Chan in action…
*Would I recommend this..?
Yes I certainly would. It is one of them movies that has everything a good movie requires, it has action, thrills, gun fights, fist fights, some cracking car chases and the tiniest amount of romance, (if you can call it that).
I defiantly wouldn't let my younger kids watch this, (and not because I'm a little cruel at times) as it does have some scenes which can be seen as frightening to younger people…
In all a very enjoyable DVD which can be bought from amazon.co.uk for less than a tenner…
