Your maiden voyage on the Titanic will not end in tragedy. This 3 hour 'titanic' spectacle is the very definition of extravaganza and melodrama in which a traditional Hollywood tale of love and sacrifice has been bound seamlessly with the very finest special effects of it's generation.
Although the dialogue and characters can appear slightly clunky and 2 dimensional, it is still difficult not to get swept up in the sheer grandeur of seeing what was the finest, largest luxury ocean liner bought back to life before your very eyes. Everything about this film is huge, the highest grossing film ever, record breaking budget of $200million, winner of 11 Academy Awards and a record of 14 nominations.
Witnessing the last hour of the sinking is a remarkable feat of cinematography, the slow, dripping realisation of the passengers and crew that they are doomed to an icy grave is played out almost in real time. Watching screaming passengers running up the side of the ship, scrambling just to stay on the dying swan of a ship for just a few moments longer, whilst the band play "Nearer my God to Thee", as the advancing water laps around their ankles. This must go down as on the finest pieces of cinema in Western History.
This film is a deeply personal, tragic spectacle. A breath taking moral lesson to us all about man who claimed 'God himself could not sink this ship.'
So to this day, I spread the word of a modern classic that will be watched for generations to come. Even if it is 3 hours long and Billy Zane appears as a cartoon villain.

(+) Jack Black, very good scenes showing the chemistry between characters, excellent soundtrack (-) Cameron Diaz can be quite irritating but not enough to put me off

I see you've posted this as a DVD review, but you've not mentioned the DVD features. Are there any extras? If so, what are they and are they any good? If you add to this, or if you change it to be posted as a "Film Only" review, which can be done by accessing "edit review" above the review and changing the drop down menu under the "Which format are you reviewing?" question at the bottom, please let me know and I'll re-rate.
