The 10 year review!

Critics sharpened their pens as they gleefully awaited the opportunity to skewer director James Cameron's arrogance: how dare he spend THAT much money? But, to paraphrase Ebenezer Scrooge, don't you have eyes to see and hearts to feel? Titanic is a great, soft-hearted traditional epic, even still, 10 years after release.

Since everyone knows what happened to that great monument to man's hubris, Cameron had to create a story using the tragedy of the shipwreck to underscore the character's fates. Furthermore, the story could not be a quirky character study; the Titanic itself would have overwhelmed such attempts at subtlety. So Cameron scripted an old-fashioned love story with familiar themes: uptight rich versus free-spirited poor, imprisonment versus freedom.

Using the technique of a story within a story, he sets Titanic in present day (well 1997) as well as in 1912, when the employment of these conventional ideas is not only forgivable, but desirable. The lead actors handle their roles very well. Leonardo DiCaprio is full of vitality as the youthful vagabond who sweeps the melancholy Kate Winslet off of her feet. He saves her from a life of sterile civility in a loveless marriage with the cartoon-ish steel baron Cal Hockley (Billy Zane - always a good bad guy).

There are some unforgettable scenes to remind us of the tragedy of the shipwreck as well: a mother reading to her children, knowing they are doomed; an old couple embracing in bed as the waters rush into their cabin; and most heart breaking of all, the shots of the hundreds of people thrashing about in the freezing North Atlantic waters as the wealthy survivors paddle around only a few metres away.

Cameron's Titanic is more than an awesome technological achievement (shots of the engine and boiler rooms ARE breathtaking). It is also a great love story, told by a director in complete command of this craft. A must see! (Although i'm sure you have already seen it!)

Good review of the film (which I hate, btw, and can only stand to watch the scene where the boat actually sinks), but for higher ratings you need to make sure you include information about the DVD (e.g., special features) or choose film only in the what format are you reviewing box
