The mere word Titanic strikes chord in most of our hearts. It appitimises the arrogance of the human race and the devistating tradgedies that such arrogance can incurr, indeed the plight of the classes aboard the Titanic strikes further into our concience as we are forcefully reminded of the inevitable end of the lower class passangers suffered.Quite possibly these thoughts and emotions are subconcious in many of us,but few hear the name without the odd hair bristling somewhere in the back of our minds. What makes this version of the film so different and refreshing is that the story is made from a different angle. Not only are we veiwing the whole tradgedy through the eyes of a survivor, but the tale encorperates the love story in a way which, without trivialising the tradgedy, lightens and embraces the emotions that are under the surface. In many ways the film concurrs with human nature in finding a posative outcome of the whole saga. There is almost an irony that having watched the film,it is possible to have cried, mourned and elated with it's characters and still be left feeling haunted yet wanting. By encourperating two such stars in the lead roles, they have also cleverly covered the angels of both men and women.Leaving a counterpart available for empathising with and longing for what ever your gender.
Titanic's latest film views the story through the eyes of a surviving passenger and carries you away on a tale of her life and loves aboard the ship.Entwine this with the salvage team that,in search of a precious gem "the heart of the ocean"are diving to reclaim items lost with the ship.Their search hitting the news, brings Rose Dawson to the salvage operation, and despite her declining years she lucidly tells her tale aboard the salvage ship.Neglecting to mention t the team that it was her who owned and still possed the gem,the truth is uncovered by the discovery of a painting from the Titanic's hull. The fact that she still owns the gem is never uncovered, and the ending fate of the gem is revealed in the closing scenes ofthe film. Through out her recollection of her time aboard the Titanic,it is shown in the manner of real time,so we journey there with her, dance, romance and meet her sweetheart Jack, her vicious fience, and we experiance the horror and panic of the devastating iceburg that hits, and eventually sinkd the ship.
Special effects are used during the film, notably when the iceburg strikes the ship.Although good use is made of them,I feel that they could have been better and more authentic.
As a three hour film it mightbe easy to assume it is hard going. For the majority of it's audiance however ,it is far from it and the three hour film seems far shorter than most films I have watched.Such is the gripping intensity of the cast, plot and pace of the film. Those amoungst you who are not inclined to tolerate a romantice vere in a film, may find this film less gripping, indeed it may possibly be quite simply, not up your street.
The film maker James Cameron brings us this film, and the cast stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet as the two main characters.Further member s of the cast are as detailed below -
Billy Zane Kathy Bates Frances Fisher Bernard Hill Jonathon Hyde Danny Nucci Gloria Stuart David Warner Victor Garber Bill Paxton
Celine Dion's powerful track "My heart will go on" offers immense accumpanyment to this incredible film, making the two almost inseperable.
I paid £19.99 for my copy from Woolworths when it was first released, but I have since seen it at various prices from £12.99 up to £18.99.
I don't think there is much else I can say about this film, except that if you've a few quid spare in your pocket, nip out buy yourself this dvd and book the 189 minute playing time.I know I'll be rewatching my copy regularly for a very long time,at least once a month I love to putit on and grab my box of hankies.
