Nobody foretold the sad end that was going to have the this enormous transatlantic when it was put in the water in the spring of 1909, constructed in Belfast (Ireland), his measures were incredible, only rudder weighed 100 tons, each one of its four chimneys could lodge in its interior to two locomotives, the boat had an approximated height of about 11 floors and their motors of 50,000 C.V. were fed by 159 coal furnaces that consumed up to two tons of coal by each crossed mile and had 16 sealed chambers that they could be closed from the single operating bridge with driving a switch, which made suppose to their creators whom

The crew was formed by 1000 people who would be in charge to sarisfacer all the whims and necessities of the 2500 passengers that were able to lodge this colossus of the sea, the main objective that the White Star persecuted Line was the one to obtain to the Maxima comfort for the passengers which they acquired the most expensive passages, providing the best and more sumptuous facilities to them and like no, the most esplendidas suites than ever they had been possible to design, noble crystal of Bohemian, wood like the ebony, the mahogany, electrical illumination, swimming pool, gymnasium, everything to justify the 4350 dollars that the most expensive passage cost, about 40000 present dollars (7,440,000 of pesetas) the best facilities of those than could arrange.

The 10 of April of 1912 the Titanic weighed anchors from the port of Southampton (England) to the U.S.A., in its interior was but select of the high European society and the new rich Americans and between these it honored Molly Brown, the one that would end up receiving the sobrename of " the unsinkable one " by its work after the collapse of the Titanic.

In the morning of the Sunday 14 of April, the captain Edward J. Smith, ordered to increase the speed, thus to beat the record of time of a transatlantic passage, this was going to be his last trip and wanted to be remembered to make so memorable feat, although never he would get to imagine that really this it would be his last trip. The increase of the speed obtained that the Titanic crossed 880 km per day, to everything parecia perfect and the passage enjoyed all the comforts that the ship provided to them.

Although in the operating bridge the spirits so were not trusted, the officials of the Titanic had received warning of other steam that sailed by the North Atlantic on the presence of icebergs which they were dragged by the current until more to the south of the habitual thing, getting to invade the commercial routes, but due to the bad communications between the room of radio and the operating bridge, those warnings only received a routine attention.

But at 21:40 radio arrived by message from small boat, Mesaba, that it noticed of presence of enormous and dense icebergs in waters by where colossus sailed enormous metallic, because the head of radio operators was occupied relaying the greetings and messages that the passengers sent to them to their wanted beings, did not make arrive this important message at the operating bridge. When the watches descried an enormous mass in front of the Titanic, the message had still not left the room of radio, Frederick Fleet gave the warning by means of three campanadas forts of alarm and a concise message to the operating bridge: " There is iceberg there ahead ".

Thirty and seven seconds later the Titanic shook and underwent the one that would be a mortal wound by starboard, in the quarter of boilers 6 number a water spurt began to flood the stay, William Murdoch, first official of the Titanic, assets the hermetic closing of the floodgates of the quarter of boilers. In less than ten minutes the water had raised 4'5 m. and the prow began to incline towards the sea, immediately Thomas Andrews, naval constructor, was called to the operating bridge like the captain of the boat, Andrews made an express I calculate and said that they lacked less than two hours so that the Titanic sank irremediably.

Immediately the captain ordered that calls of aid to all the boats were emitted that was near its location and which the 16 wood boats and the other 4 pegables were offed-hook, half of which had been necessary. Two hours later, 2:20 of the dawn, the fleeting lucky people who were in the dinghies and those who fought to survive in the water saw as the enormous stern of the ship were raised on the sea, during seconds, before submerging in the dark entrails of the sea.

Finally, it did the 4:00, she appeared the one that stops many was " the most beautiful vision than they could never see sight ", the Carpathia, a robust ship that had received the call of aid of the Titanic and that went to the zone to come to the rescue, 705 people of the 2500 which they traveled in the Titanic raised on board and a mass in honor of the thousands of people was celebrated who had passed away in the place of the disaster.

Months after the collapse an investigation commission published the data of its work, of the 2500 passengers and crew of the transatlantic one perished more than 1500 people, the dinghies had capacity for 1200 people sólamente, although this satisfied the legal norms with the time, but in the chaos of the collapse more than 500 seats they were without occupying, the passengers of third class who had been catched behind the metallic doors when he was allowed them to pass to cover many of the boats already had descended, the consequences were obvious of which traveled in first and second class survived all except one, whereas of the travellers who were in third parts, mainly young.

Sharl 11.11.2001 13:10

Terrific information on the factual titanic. You obviously know your stuff. But this is lacking in information regarding the actual film ie Characters, director and other such important info to make this opinion work. I'll be happy to come and have another look and re-rate if you include this information. Best of luck :) Sharl
