The script was quite well written - neat and tidy, but too long, far too soppy and a little too predictable (yes we all knew the boat was going to sink).
Well I have to say it, but I am in love with Kate Winslet. I dont care if anyone calls her a fat cow because she’s not, she’s fantastic. Shame her acting skills aren’t brilliant though. And as for Leonardo diBentio, well someone should have shot him long ago. His acting skills are even worse than Harold Bishop (and yes, that’s saying something). For this reason, I won't be going to see The Beach. I am boycotting it. Maybe this film would have been a lot less painful if they had both jumped at the start when she was standing on the rail at the back of the boat. Billy Zane’s bad man portrayal was very good, as was the rest of the cast.
Ok ok, so this film was well directed. As much as I think James Cameron is an arrogant git, he does know how to make decent films. The effects were second to none but I’m still not convinced about the iceberg. Or *that* hand in the car...
If you happen to be a teeny bopper who loves Leonardo DiBentio and the Vengaboys, then this film’s simple tragedy will have you tearfully rewinding the bit where Leo goes down in the water again and again. If like me though, you hate the gimp and can see through the overall soppyness of the whole thing you will be rewinding the bit where Leo dies over and over again laughing your head off wildly.
