The Time Of Your Life - 1947 DVD

Advantages: Wonderful plot, very character driven
Disadvantages: Very violent in places

...The Shawshank Redemption is often included in lists of the best films of all time, and I would argue rightly so! The story of a "wrongly accused banker Andy Dufresne who arrives at Shawshank Prison in 1947 after receiving a double life sentence for the brutal murders of his wife and her lover." - That's what it says on the box. The story is so much more than that; a touching, character-driven incite into the lives of a selected few residents trapped inside the high walls of Shawshank Prison, with an underlying ambience of violence and corruption. The Shawshank Redemption is wonderfully acted, and a rollercoaster of emotions; certainly gritty at times, sad at others, while hope endures in some parts of the film. While quite long at 136 minutes, the Shawshank Redemption is certainly worth watching. For once a film that is hugely hyped... Read review

Stars include Michael Palin as Gilbert Chilvers, Maggie Smith as his social climbing wife Joyce and Denholm Elliot as the Doctor. Rated 15 and suitable for people of 15 years and over. Music by John Du Prez. The production of the film includes executives George Harrison (ex Beatle) and Dennis O'Brien. Directed by Malcolm Mowbray. ***THE STORY*** This vicious, tasteless satirical British comedy is set in 1947 Britain when post war privation still meant rationing. Gilbert Chivers a podiatrist & his wife Joyce move to a new area and increasingly become involved in black market doings. Ham is still contraband due to a shortage of supplies. Advantages: great action film

..., with intervention of the military, especially the 'Black Knights', led by Captain Steven Hiller, (played by Will Smith), the action really gets going, as we are treated to some fantastic air-to-air combat with the F/A 18 Hornet verses the much superior fire power of the saucer shaped alien fighter crafts. **IN CONCLUSION** A great movie to see for all the family, {unless you have a fear of aliens}. There is some great special effects and some fantastic explosions as most of the world comes under attack from the Aliens. The gruesome looking Aliens are well made and can be a little scary for people with a nervous disposition, {so be aware before asking your great granny to watch it with you}. Also, when the film moves to the desert it brings up an long standing conspiracy theory regarding Area 51 and the discovery of a space ship at Roswell in 1947... Read review
