The Three Musketeers [2004]
The unlikeliest heroes in any queen's court would have to be janitors Mickey Mouse, Donald
... more
Duck, and Goofy, who dream of adventure in Disney's animated featureThe Three Musketeersand get their wish under dubious circumstances. Though the trio aspires to perform brave deeds on behalf of their monarch, Minnie Mouse (who pines for a fantasy beau that looks a lot like Mickey), they are held back as servants by the head Musketeer, Pete. What they don't know is that Pete secretly schemes to get rid of the queen but has, thus far, failed in his efforts. Desperate, he appoints Mickey and his bumbling friends guardians to Minnie--on the assumption she'll be all the more vulnerable--but underestimates their determined, if slapstick, resourcefulness. Good, classic Disney comedy meets storybook romance in this short (68 minutes) animated feature, which features songs and familiar melodies by Tchaikovsky, Strauss, and Beethoven. --Tom Keogh

DVD Description
Richard Lester's rendition of Alexandre Dumas' classic swashbuckling adventure is a tongue-in-cheek comedy that thumbs its nose at its more serious predecessors. Having divided the story into two separate films, Lester manages to capture some of the more intricate details of book. The first film features the arrival of D'Artagnan in Paris and his efforts to become a King's Musketeer, just like his father before him. In Paris he encounters three men who quickly become his friends and allies. Together they get entangled in court intrigues, and take up arms against the plotting, conniving Cardinal Richelieu. In the course of duty, they travel to England, where they try to preempt a scandal involving some diamond studs, the Duke of Buckingham and the reputation of the Queen of France.

Background and Storyline
There is an evil king ruling France called Louis the fourteenth. He only cares about himself and starves his people. Somebody has to get rid of him. So the three original musketeers “Athos, Porthos, and Aramis” decide to try and replace the king. The priest ‘Aramis’ knows of his twin brother who is locked away in the dungeons somewhere in France. They come up with the plan to replace the king with his brother. But the king has lots of guards protecting him and shows no mercy. Worst of all the king murdered Athos’s son, and D’targon does not agree with the plan of replacing the king.
The film was released onto cinemas in 1998, and went straight to the box...

Advantages: Hilarious, funniest film of the year. Disadvantages: It's not a comedy.
...and original idea. The classic by Alexandre Dumas has been much interpreted with many different films and plays, but never before has it been so abused. The story of young D’Artagnan, his travels to Paris to become a Musketeer and his subsequent adventures has even been made into a rather cool cartoon called Albert The Fifth Musketeer which was actually ten times better than the limp overlong turkey fest I had to endure. Its not even as though we need another adaption with The ThreeMusketeers and The Man In The Iron Mask still well within recent memory. It is a further crime that with so many other great movies of the swash buckling type, Hollywood can still manage to regurgitate a film entirely stolen from other films that is still so disgustingly bad.
The pilfered plot began with a young D’Artagnan living with his parents...

...Do not fret, while this op concerns the region 1 double disc release of Richard Lesters 'The ThreeMusketeers' and 'The Four Musketeers', both films are available on region 2 thanks to Momentum.
Why favour the Anchor Bay region 1 release then? Simply beause it comes with an interesting, if not essential, 2 part documentary on the making of these 70's classics.
An exhaustive shooting schedule began in 1972 on a lavish version of Alexander Dumas' classic tale, on reaching the cinema screen in 1973 the cast were dumbfounded to discover just half of the material that they shot and an announcement that 'The Four Musketeers' would follow soon. Depending on which version you believe, this was either a cynical ploy to get 2 films out of 1 set of salaries, or the footage shot was just too good to condense into 1 movie. I would like to believe...
