Advantages: Beautifully filmed, powerful message Disadvantages: Drags a little, sometimes confusing
Ranch hand Pete Perkins is not a happy man. His best friend and fellow ranch hand, the MelquiadesEstrada of the title, has been shot dead by a trigger happy border patrol officer, Mike Norton. Now he wants revenge, but Norton's boss would rather brush the whole thing under the carpet. Perkins therefore decides to take things into his own hands and force Perkins to make amends by taking Estrada's body back to his Mexican hometown to bury him. Will Perkins be able to bypass the law in order to get what he wants? And will Norton come to realise the wrong that he has committed?
I don't think I would ever have watched this film if I hadn't read a couple of reviews recommending it - I just don't like anything that smacks of Westerns and that is exactly what this film is - a modern day Western. However, it is more than 'just' a Western - it ...
Advantages: Very well written, acted and great to look at. Disadvantages: Too small to mention here
My husband put this on our DVD rental list and at first I was a bit dubious about it. I had only heard fleeting things about the film and for the life of me I couldn't remember whether it was good or bad so I didn't know wha to expect really. I have to admit that I was more than pleasantly surprised.
The 2005 The ThreeBurials of MelquiadesEstrada is in fact Jones' second directorial offering (the first being a tv movie called The Good Old Boys) who together with the film's writer Giuermo Arriaga who has also given us the likes of 21 Grams have provided a wonderful modern western in a US border town and Mexico. The story is literally based around the title - Melquiades is a Mexican cowboy who entered the US illegally in search of work and we follow the events that lead up to death and the circumstances around why he has three ...
Advantages: a thoughtful look at cultural intolerance Disadvantages: none
At a time when the world as at it most mistrusting in a cross cultural sense, with one secular or religious group suspiciously eying and pointing fingers at the next, this film, in many ways is well timed and very relevant. But with the focus on the middle east and 9/11 in films and on TV maybe for a more general understanding of cultural intolerance we need to step back a little further, forget the specifics and just view these problems from a higher, less specific position. Tommy Lee Jones directorial debut offers us this and much more besides. By focusing on a story that takes place over the Texas-Mexican border and the relationships and attitudes formed between the two sides, "The ThreeBurials of Meiquiades Estrada" acts as a microcosm of human nature and makes for a good analogy of a much bigger problem. Jones said in a recent ...

Review
Tommy Lee Jones has been a strong and witty presence in the movies, and in directing himself he has reached the pinnacle of his career with THE THREE BURIALS OF MELQUIADES ESTRADA (Los Angeles Times, 19/02/2009)
[The film] strikes both fresh and familiar chords, most of them pleasingly dissonant. Directed with a steady hand and an eye for eccentric detail... (New York Times, 19/02/2009)
Jones shakes you in a way you do not see coming. His movie is a powder keg (Rolling Stone, 19/02/2009)
Beautifully shot by Chris Menges and expertly acted by Barry Pepper...Dwight Yoakam...and, most compelling of all, Jones, this is a film that, for all its echoes of other cross-border excursions, is genuinely original (Sight And Sound, 19/02/2009)
The magic of THREE BURIALS lies in Jones' understated, hugely affecting performance (Total Film, 19/02/2009)
DVD Description
Tommy Lee Jones takes his second turn in the director's chair with THE THREE BURIALS OF MELQUIADES ESTRADA, the follow-up to his 1995 western THE GOOD OLD BOYS. The action takes place on the border between West Texas and Northern Chihuahua in Mexico, which is a hot spot for illegal crossings. But Jones' movie ingeniously flips this dangerous yet all-too-common practice on its head, with a tale of a man hell-bent on crossing the border in the opposite direction. The journey to Mexico begins when Pete Perkins (Jones) uncovers the identity of a Border Patrolman, Mike Norton (Barry Pepper), who has shot and killed his best friend, Melquiades Estrada (Julio Cedillo). Kidnapping Norton and forcing him to dig up Estrada's body, Perkins straps the corpse to a horse, and informs Norton that he will be travelling with them to Mexico. Once there, they will bury Estrada according to instructions he gave Perkins prior to his death. Jones paints Norton as a mean-spirited individual; caught up in a loveless relationship with his wife, Lou Ann (January Jones), Norton's day job frequently involves him either exploding in a violent rage or idly masturbating over a well-thumbed copy of Hustler. The two men don't exactly bond on their journey, the wedge that's been forced between them being far too great for them to reconcile their differences. But Jones coerces a riveting tale from Guillermo Arriaga script, with a choppy chronology reminiscent of Arriaga's own 21 GRAMS. Comparisons to Sam Peckinpah's masterfully bleak 1974 movie BRING ME THE HEAD OF ALFREDO GARCIA are inevitable, although Jones' film has a tender edge that Peckinpah's nihilistic epic was never quite capable of reaching. A film that suggests Jones has a bright future ahead of him as a director, THE THREE BURIALS OF MELQUIADES ESTRADA is one of the most absorbing pieces of cinema to emerge in 2005.
