Karas: The Third Man - Original Soundtrack

Karas: The Third Man - Original Soundtrack

The two most memorable aspects of director Carol Reed's 1949 adaptation of Graham Greene's ... more

post-War Vienna-based mystery Third Man are prime
examples of the paradoxical power of cinematic
myth. Orson Welles, the actor most identified with
the film, has little more than a cameo in it,
while the musical theme of his character (Harry
Lime)--an infectiously jaunty tune played on the
zither--became an international pop repertoire
icon for a half-century, even if it was almost
always incorrectly labeled "The Third Man Theme".
Reed's decision to eschew an orchestra for the
solo zither performances of Anton Karas was a
pioneering one, though the Viennese-born musician
originally didn't receive credit as composer and
despite the enduring global impact of his music,
would never compose for films again. This marks
the first digital recording of the landmark score,
performed here with an uncanny ear for Karas'
original inflections by award-winning Bavarian
soloist Gertrud Huber--all the more remarkable
considering Karas' original session performances
were largely ad-libbed. Karas' sprightly melodies
are as timeless and internationally evocative as
ever, supplemented here by dialog snippets of the
film and orchestrated versions of the "Harry Lime"
and "Café Mozart" themes that only serve to
underscore the singular power of the original's
solo intentions. --Jerry McCulley, Amazon.com

His rise from the rough streets of Cuba to the top of Miami's drug fuelled empire. Tony Montana wanted it all wealth, power and control, he was living this life, which they call the American Dream. This film is surely a true great. It's greed for wealthness would make you envious. There's always a saying for people like Tony, ' the person that wants too much from life, risk ...

Brotherly Love!

Advantages: Excellent film
Disadvantages: none

towards the end when he realises that there is only so much that he can do to forge a brotherly relationship with Raymond. I really enjoyed this film and it's definitely one that you are likely to want to watch more than once. As the DVD I have is the Collector's Edition there are a number of extras that are all worth taking a look at. These include: The journey of Rain Man featurette The Fog: a look at the mysteries of autism Audio commentaries by director Barry Levinson and writers Barry Morrow and Ronald Bass Deleted scenes Photo gallery Original trailer If you are into watching the extras I definitely recommend the first two featurettes. The Special edition DVD is available on Amazon for £5.88. It has a 15 rating and a running time of 128 minutes. ...

Men in Black Special Edition DVD Review

Advantages: Stacks upon stacks of extra features.
Disadvantages: Unecessary inclusion of 4:3 ratio version.

Now, Men in Black was already a superb film. What has always been good about it is it's perfect suitability to just plonk yourself down and watch it on the spur of the moment. With the incredible amount of extra features included on this DVD you will be plonking yourself down for a considerable time to come. All of the features are perfectly matched to the style of the film. My particular favourites are the out-takes (an excellent one involving the out of control ball seen - without the ball) and the scene editing workshop. At least you can have a go at putting a film together. My only criticism is that the whole DVD fills you with a feeling of greed and you can't help but want more. ...
