After thirty-odd years of silence, Terrence Malick returned to make his third film, "The Thin Red Line". Based upon the novel of the same name by James Jones, it is a harrowing tale of a US Army platoons attempts to capture the island of Guadalcanal from the Japanese. This was a pivotal point of the Second World War; yet this film ignores the history and politics of the event, and opts to focus upon the human emotion.
The film’s structure is simple, and nothing extraordinary happens, yet this is nothing short of a masterpiece. The photography is incredibly beautiful, with profound imagery of nature within the heart of war. At one point, a lone blue butterfly drifts passed the camera as the ground erupts in a shower of mud and human bodies.
The performances are fault less, as one would expect from such a vast selection of talent. At times the film does seem to wander into 'pretentious' territory, but for me the multiple voiceovers and philosophical content have helped create one of the most profoundly rich and poetic films ever.
…And the sound track is awesome!

Advantages: The film is presented in usch a way that I really can't explain it. Just take my word for it and go and watch it now. Disadvantages: I think audiences will find it that bit too slow to start with, just bear with it and you will love it.
