The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre was released back in 1974 gaining outstanding critical acclaim and terrifying audiences everywhere…but I have to be honest and say that I don't understand why. I only saw the original a few years back and I was disappointed. I thought the acting was awful and the film was a mess. I know that it might have been different back in 1974 as nobody had ever seen anything like it before but still…I don't think it deserves the status it has. A few sequels followed which just got worse and worse but in 2003 The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was remade and updated for a new-generation of horror movie goers creating a genuinely terrifying movie that re-invented the series and put the much needed life back into it. Some reviews it earned include:
'Fabulous…A series of heart-stopping shocks' Daily Star 'Absolutely bloody terrifying' Total Film 'Scary movies are back!' Daily Mail

The movie takes place in the year 1973 with 5 friends, Erin (Jessica Biel) and her boyfriend Kemper (Eric Balfour), Morgan (Jonathan Tucker), Pepper (Erica Leerhsen) and Andy (Mike Vogul) driving back from a trip to Mexico and now on their way to a big rock concert. On their way there they almost run over a young woman who is walking in the middle of the road. Quickly swerving to avoid her, then stopping, Erin and Pepper persuade the distressed young woman to get in the
van with them and offer to take her wherever she needs to go. Things take a turn for the worse when the young woman starts screaming at them, telling them that they're going the wrong way and that she won't go back there. She then takes a gun from between her legs, puts it in her mouth and shoots herself.
Seeking help, the 5 friends stop at a gas station where they ask to use the phone to call the sheriff. They are told that they have to go down to the old mill to meet the sheriff there. Confused and angry but desperate for help they have no choice. They drive to the old mill with the young womans body still in the back of their van but find no one there. After waiting for a while and a debate wether to just leave the body there and drive away Erin and Kemper search for further help at a nearby house whilst the other 3 stay with the body incase the sheriff turns up which he does leading to a brilliant and unsettling introduction to Sheriff Hoyt (R. Lee Ermey) who takes the body with him and bids Pepper, Andy and Morgan farewell but this is not the last time we will see him.
Meanwhile Erin and Kemper, at the nearby house, run into an old man in a wheelchair who allows Erin inside but informs Kemper to stay where he is…outside. Erin calls the sheriffs department once more but is called for help before she leaves by the old man who has fallen out of his wheelchair. Kemper, after waiting a long time, decides to go inside the house to look for Erin but what he meets there is a terrifying and sudden death with an amazing introduction scene for Leather face (the movie's killer). Confused as to where Kemper has got to she decides to go back to the van hoping that he'll be there but there's no sign of him. Worried that something has happened to her boyfriend she asks Andy to come back to the house with her to take a look. Whilst Erin distracts the old man sitting outside Andy sneaks inside and looks for Kemper but finds no sign of him. Hearing loud noises coming from inside the house Erin runs in to see if everything is ok which leads to the first terrifying chase of the movie. She barely manages to get away back to the Van but Andy is not so lucky becoming the second of Leatherface's victims.
I don't want to recite the entire film and spoil it for you so I'm just gonna say that what comes next is brutal, disturbing and scary movie leading to a fantastic finale chase that really gets your heart going. In my opinion, Leatherface has never been so terrifying yet sometimes he is over-shadowed by the deeply disturbing if not more psychotic character of Sheriff Hoyt thanks to R. Lee Ermey's outstanding performance. Jessica Biel also gives a surprisingly good performance as Erin who really makes you feel what she's going through. You're really routing for her at the end after going through everything she has and it just adds to the overall enjoyment of it.
* dVD & EXTRAs *
This movie gets a good DVD outing with a 2 disc release. The first disc includes three different commentaries. A production commentary, a technical commentary and a Story commentary all offering in-depth detail of the makings of the movie so depending on what you want to know about the movie, take your pick! The second disc offers a Photo gallery and deleted scenes which are mainly gorier versions of the death sequences which I enjoyed watching. You also get an alternate opening and closing which I also really enjoyed and thought would have also worked well in the final version of the movie, Ed Gein: The ghoul of plainfield documentary about the real life serial killer who Leatherface is based on. More extra's include Severed Parts, a documentary on the special effects and the TCM ''REDUX'' documentary which is an incredible indepth look at the making of the movie including interviews with almost all of the cast and crew who worked on it. Nothing is left out. And finally you get Cast Screen Tests, Art Gallery and a selection of TV spots so as for extra's there's more than enough here to keep you entertained for a while and their pretty decent one's too.
The film is presented in (my favourite) Anamorphic Widescreen with a 5.1 surround sound which really works well with the brilliant score.

Narrator: The events of that day were to lead to one of the most bizarre crimes in the annals of American history - the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

This is one of the scariest recent horror movies I've seen and is what a real horror movie should be…none of this 'Scream' style toilet humour included, this is pure horror. It's not incredibly gory but some people with weak stomachs might find it a little too much to handle…you have been warned. Basically, if your looking for a purely terrifying experience then this movie is for you, if it's too much for you to handle then I suggest you go and rent something like The Fog. In an industry now churning out terrible remakes by the minute (Uh-Hum…The Fog) it's refreshing to see a remake that is still a remake (no denying that) but with an entirely new, refreshing take on the story. Horror Movie Re-makers take note and watch this, let it show you how it's done.

I have seen this movie in the German language, even though I don´t fully understand the language but this kind of movie you don´t have to understand much the language. Honestly this is not my kind of movie, it´s disgusting rather than scary. Anyway, I would say you have done a great job in this review. *LuNa*
