The Terry-Thomas Collection - Make Mine Mink / Too Many Crooks / The Naked Truth (DVD)

Advantages: A good ensemble piece with many well known character actors
Disadvantages: Loses the plot slightly towards the end

...The late 1940's until the early 60's was a golden era for British comedy. You know the sort I'm talking about,. the ones that now often get shown on Sunday afternoons on (usually) the commercial channels and seem to feature a cast of well known British character actors of that period. I'm primarily thinking here not just of the superior Ealing comedies and the ones by the Bouting brothers but also the ones that are more obscure. The Naked Truth falls into this latter category. Made in the year I was born (1957), it features Dennis Price as a caddish, blackmailing, scandal magazine (the 'Naked Truth' of the title) editor, earning loadsamoney by blackmailing hundreds of prominent and/or well placed people, of which Terry-Thomas, Peter Sellers, Shirley Eaton and Peggy Mount are but four. ...Since reviewing the Platinum collection double cd i thought it would be appropriate to do the same with the Queen dvd.I dug it out of the archives,had a watch and still enjoyed it as much as i always did.Sometimes it pays to not overplay any music you have as it then tends to become a little boring.It must be a couple of years since i watched this so this is my view on what i consider to be an excellent dvd. The design....... This dvd case is designed in black with the now famous four band members in their traditional 'Bohemian Rhapsody' pose.The four faces bearing no hint of a smile highlighted against a dark background.Above is the title designed in silver text which stands out nicely on the black background.The back cover has the song listings in white text and again on a black background. Advantages: Pretty funny if you like slapstick humour, has bonus features
Disadvantages: Too much of a muchness, generally pretty expensive

...particularly often, even just renting them might be enough but obviously thats up to you. I'd recommend that if your into slapstick comedies and haven't seen them, that you watch them, or at least the first few (the first 2 at least I'd say) and the 5th one, as I personally think they are the best, by renting them but I wouldn't recommend buying the full boxset unless it happens to be on sale pretty cheap, as so many of the movies are so similar, I personally don't see myself watching most of the DVDs more than possibly twice . Just to make it clear, the rating is generally about the movies themselves but I'd say that the collection as a DVD boxset at the price I've seen it being offered for (over £30) is poor... the movies themselves individually are pretty satisfactory and you can get some laughs out of all of them but I wouldn't really...
