Horror legend Boris Karloff and a young Jack Nicholson team up in this disjointed but enjoyable Roger Corman quickie. Nicholson plays Lieutenant Andre Duvalier, an officer under...
more...Napoleon who finds himself lost along a stretch of beach, where he is seduced by the beautiful Helene (Sandra Knight), who may or may not be a ghost. His obsession leads him to the gloomy castle of Baron Von Leppe (Karloff), a recluse haunted by the ghost of his dead wife, Ilse, who Andre suspects is actually Helene, or vice versa. Longtime Corman regular Dick Miller plays Stefan, Von Leppe's trusty servant, and Dorothy Neumann is a witch who may be using Helene as a tool for revenge. All the characters do lots of skulking around the gloomy sets and outdoors along the beautiful Big Sur coastline, where the exteriors were filmed. Corman shot the interior scenes in two days, on sets left standing from his previous film, THE RAVEN. Though a little short on coherence, it's a lot of fun, and it's great to see Karloff and Nicholson together in a sort of passing of the machiavellian torch. A nicely ominous mood maintains itself with the help of Ronald Stein's robust score.

This film is laughable bad. It seriously is crap. It contains a Duke who is actually some other guy who has taken on the body and mind of teh duke. In my mind that pretty much makes him the duke. What else is left. There's nothing horrifying about despite the name. Ha God it's crap. I bought it for 99p and it's not worth any more than that. It's just so unbelievably stupid. This mightn't be the most articulate review ever but if you see this film you'll understand. It's also full of historical inaccuracies to name a few

1) Jack plays a napoleonic soldier who has got lost from his battalion after the battle of Auswitch. Well he has got seriously seriously lost as Auswitch was in Austria and he ends up beside the sea.

2) This Napolenic soldier dspite being really bad at orientation does eem to be quite clever as he has invented the revolver and given it to the onset of the 19th century

3) The Baron/duke who is apparently austrian but could be Italian if the geography worked out abit better prefers to adorn his castle in French and English standards rather than those of his own nation.

But the greatest shock is Francis Ford Coppolla made this film!!! Well I suppose we all have to satrt somewhere
