What can I say?, possibly the greatest film of all time on possibly the best DVD yet. It's hard to know where to begin, I mean, the film is perfect, it comes in a double DVD box set which is nicely packaged…it's almost too good.
The story is simple enough, basically two individuals from the near future appear in 1984 Los Angeles, both trying to find Sarah Connor - car chases and gun battles ensue, lots of big explosions and nice special effects, the Terminator and his array of one-liners and catchphrases become famous and a few careers sky-rocket in the process.
Arnold Schwarzenegger has a certain reputation with regards to his films. They seem to have so much mindless violence that it doesn't really require a great deal pf acting on his part…and to an extent this is true of Terminator, but that's the beauty of it…he doesn't really have to say anything - his actions do all the talking. His cold emotionless stare is occasionally enough to send shivers down our spine. Also his performance as a robot mimicking a human is very convincing…even without the special make-up to show he is a machine underneath the flesh. His robotic posture and walk, the way his eyes scan back and forward searching for his target, and his sheer size all add to his menacing appearance.
In my opinion, Michael Beihns most prominent role has been as Kyle Reese in Terminator. Beihn gives a very convincing portrayal of the man out of time, who has only known a life of conflict and turmoil - and it comes across as he tries to cope with his new surroundings, as he is thrown back in time to a point before the "war against the machines" (as it is so dramatically described)
Linda Hamilton is also great as the girl-next-door, Sarah Connor, who must come to terms with the importance of her existence - and the major role that her unborn son will play in the forthcoming war against the machines.
There are also solid performances from Lance Henrikson and Paul Winfield, plus there are some familiar cameos throughout, such as Dick Millar, Bill Paxton and William Wisher (co-writer for Terminator)
I also love the soundtrack, its excellent. Brad Fiedel did a great job of making what is, a very industrial style soundtrack - and went on to make an even BETTER soundtrack for the sequel. Plus, you got to love Stan Winstons puppets and miniatures, they're just so good - and for being made in 1984, it's definitely ahead of its time.
The critics will probably tell you "Titanic" was James Cameron's greatest triumph (it won enough academy awards…), but they lie, for it is the Terminator which earned Cameron the reputation and the success. Cameron was well pleased with it too, and so would you, if you managed to turn your dream into a reality. From fever-induced dream to Hollywood epic, The Terminator has won a place in many peoples hearts, mine included.
For such a great film to appear on such a great DVD is surely a triumph. There are so few discs that can boast the wealth or quality of extras that this one does. The package is also nicely presented in a fold-out box set with booklet inside.
The quality of picture and sound is excellent, but my only gripe is that the subtitles at the beginning of the film that explain the war against the machines are not from the original 1984 version. They instead overlap the black bar at the bottom…meaning that if you are watching this in Widescreen, and choose to watch it in 16:9, then you are going to get the words cut off.
But to be honest, it doesn't matter - the film is brilliant, the discs are brilliant and that’s all there is too it. Just buy it and see for yourself.

The Terminator Review ofThe Terminator (Special Edition) (DVD)by

Advantages: Arnie; Michael Biehn; Love sub-plot; Scary; Concept of the Future Disadvantages: Dated CGI
...cyborg. In this iconic role, the tight-lipped, square-headed Austrian warped into the minds of many 80s youths, such as myself, and made us truly believe there are killer robots aiming to wipe out our existence in the near future. Even today, the haunting science behind the fictitious tale of The Terminator contributes to my cynical outlook of men at war with machines.
By now, it is common knowledge that John Connor is at the pinnacle of humanity's ... ...century. The machines, of course, fully aware of this threat, decide to send a T-800 model (Arnie) back in time to kill Connor's mother Sarah; thus, attempting to eliminate the child's existence prior to him being born. Fortunately, Kyle Reese (Michael Biehn), is also sent back as one of the freedom fighters, and is prepared to protect the target from the seemingly indestructible cyborg right until the very end.

...on viewing again it's a very high calibre thriller with an excellent and incredibly scary performance from Anthony Hopkins. The wordplay and scenes between Clarice and Lecter also crackle with tension.
This specialedition comes housed on two dvd's in the same type of packaging MGM adopted for their release of The Terminatordvd. It features some nice artwork and a booklet with some good information on the production.
The first reason to buy this edition is a new transfer of the film. Now you can view it in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen which so far has been the major factor in stopping me buying a previous edition. The transfer is excellent with an solid balance of colour, the dark nature of the film's look throws up no real problems. There are a few extremely minor print blemishes but this film is 10 years old now so you can expect a few...

...Last Christmas I was perusing the virtual-shelves of play.com trying to find the ideal present (a DVD) for my Dad. As I was scanning the bargains, I spotted the 2-disc SpecialEditionDVD of Terminator for only £7.99, and if there is a film out there that makes a more apt present for a father, then I’ve yet to find it!
James Cameron’s first outing as a film director may at first glance appear to be your typical action film; its got good guys and bad guys, guns ‘n’ gore, and a large dollop of explosions thrown in for good measure. But Cameron is a very clever man – his ability as an art-director allowed him to design an intricate and detailed account of what he wanted everything to look like, and the film-making process effectively brought his drawings to life.
The Terminator is a sci-fi/action thriller...

This is a fantastic film, and is one of the most comprehensive DVDs I’ve seen. Really, no collection can afford to be without it.
The Film:
Director James Cameron (Aliens, The Abyss, Titanic) revisits the film that made his name in Hollywood, The Terminator, and produces a fantastic sequel. The film itself is the extended “specialedition” cut, with a good fifteen minutes of extra footage. The packaging claims, somewhat disingenuously, that it’s never been seen before, although I’ve seen this version on broadcast television.
The film’s narrative is pretty much a carbon copy of the first film; a Terminator cyborg is sent back in time from a post-apocalyptic future to assassinate...

James Cameron's THE TERMINATOR is one of the tightest, tensest sci-fi films ever made and a landmark in the genre. In the year 2029, battles rage between the superintelligent machines that rule the world and the last vestiges of humanity. In late-20th-century Los Angeles, Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) suddenly finds herself stalked by an unstoppable killing machine--a Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger) sent from the future to kill her and her unconceived son, John Connor, the future leader of the human resistance. Sarah can rely only on Reese (Michael Biehn), a soldier sent from the future to protect her from the seemingly indestructible Terminator and save humanity. This low-budget masterpiece was the breakthrough film for director Cameron, who weds special effects, thrills, and understated romance to create one of the finest action films of the 1980s, which spawned many imitations but few equals. Science fiction author Harlan Ellison sued over the film's similarities to his own works, especially the OUTER LIMITS episode "Demon with a Glass Hand," and won acknowledgement in the film's credits. Schwarzenegger will forever be known as the relentless Terminator, a heartless killing machine who returns (in a kinder, gentler form) in 1991's TERMINATOR 2: JUDGMENT DAY.
