A few weeks ago I was mindlessly channel surfing when suddenly I came across the advertisement for this movie. After seeing tom hanks as the star i thought to myself that i should check this movie out because it actually looked good and was different from other movies out at the time like hellboy.
This movie is based on a true story and the rights were paid to the person involved. The original story of this was an Iranian refigee whos name i forget was stranded in Charles de gaulles airport around the late 80s or early 90s because he had his passport and refugee documents stolen. Due to this he had to stay in the terminal because he could not legally enter Paris or leave Paris to anywhere else so he was stateless. He has since been allowed to enter Paris or return to his home but he has chosen to stay in the Terminal.
The story in this story has been slightly modified, Tom Hanks the star of this film plays Viktor Navorski a man who lands in New York JFK Airport from the fictional country of Krakozhia. But when he lands his passport is deemed as void due to his country being in the status of war and revolution. This leads to him not being able to enter New York or being able to go back to Krakozhia. So what can he do? he has to stay at the terminal till his status can be sorted. During his stay at the airport he befriends various people including a passport officer, food delivery boy, baggage officers, cleaners etc. This all leads to various shananigans in the movie that make it very funny.
Like most movies there is always a love interest for the main character and in this movie comes in the form of Catherine Zeta Jones. In this film she is an air hostess who has a tendancy to have affairs with married men. She also resembles Meg Ryan in some parts of the movie, this is probably due to the hair style they gave her.
In my areas of the movie it is very funny and Tom Hanks is not one I would feel was a good comic performer. In this movie he proved me wrong and had impressed me with his accent. Seeing as Spielberg doesn't have much of a track record in directing Romantic films i was pleasantly suprised and I thought every bit of this movie was pretty good. The set that was used resembled a real airport and drew me into the film even more. The magic of Tom Hanks' performance created a sort of aura that enhanced the performance of the cast and really put a stamp of the film in my mind.
I found this film quite entertaining because of a few factors, the great performance of Tom Hanks, his fellow cast, great set design and intriguing storyline. But there are always problems or one problem to be exact. This problem? well its Catherine Zeta Jones, I felt her role was pretty useless and i didn't think the ending suited the role she was playing.
