This is a story that is loosely based on an iranian man that was stopped leaving Paris airport in 1988 after having his passport stolen and his refugee papers with a spielberg twist to it (I have since learnt this after watching the film as i don't remember hearing about it at the time but maybe i was just being blonde?!).
Again as with nearly all films I had seen nothing about this until my other half mentioned wanting to see it then i saw a trailer about it and thought it looked quite good and i didn't realise it had tom hanks in until i saw the trailer, up until that point it sounded like something like an arnie film and i really didn't ant to see it!
Basically the story is about a man called viktor (hanks) who goes for a holiday to america from a country called Krokoshny ( i don't think thats how its spelt but it sort of how it sounds so i apologise). Whilst he is in mid flight his country has a coup and change of government that until it is recognised by the US officials it renders his passport invalid so he know is stuck he can't go back and he can't enter america which means until all the official stuff is done he is floating in the middle with no money as his currency is no good, nowhere to go and no real understanding of english.
In the meantime the top man of security is trying to encourage him to leave the terminal so that he will be someone elses problem, and he can carry on looking good and climbing the career ladder! There is also a cleaner and an airport worker who he manages to befriend. The story then revolves around his ability to learn and adapt and then fall for an airstewardess (zeta-jones) called amelia.
Having had my passport stolen in africa whilst queueing for a flight home from right underneath my nose and ending up being stuck for a few days until the embassy was open I can relate just a little to the fear this man must have felt being stuck somewhere not being able to get a message home and not understanding anything he is told and also having worked in a very busy airport terminal and dealing with people that don't speak the language I thought tom hanks portrayal of a man that doesn't understand anything of the language except a few small words was excellent and so spot on it was funny, i wanted to strangle the top man and the security guard were talking so quickly and thinking he understood when he said yes to everything or repeated words i was practically shouting SLOW DOWN and gesticulate! haha
Catherine Zeta Jones plays a stewardess that Viktor falls for, and I have to be honest I didn't like her in it i thought she was wooden, false and i just didn't like her but Hanks does it so well i ignored her! haha
The head of security (played by stanley tucci), Frank Dixon is very good and really made me dislike him for his patronising and horrible way of talking to viktor immediately and seeing him shown up was excellent haha
I also really liked Gupta(Kumar Pallana) who played the cleaner who always wanted to know if you had an appointment, was hilarious and would have liked to see abit more of him! Overall I really enjoyed this film and i don't want to tell you anymore and ruin how he survives because you really do have to watch it! But if you want to have a giggle and watch something that will pull at your heart strings even if you won't admit it, and not get a headache from trying to follow the story this is one for you!
