The Terminal is acclaimed director Steven spiebergs 22nd film and also one of his best.Consdering that most of his films[Jaws,ET,Schilnders list] are classics,it shows just how good the Terminal is.His last 2 films both in the scifi genre AI[2001] and minority report[2002] were both intense and heavy going in places. However in the terminal Spieberg has lightened the tone without losing the serious side of the story. He has also added some nice humour which makes the film very enjoyable.
The terminal uses as inspiration for its story the true tale in 1988 of Merhani nasseri a rerfugee from iran who got stranded at a airport in france after his passport and papers were stolen. He was forced to stay at the airport for months. In the film Tom hanks plays Viktor norvorski who has landed in New york from a little country Krakozha. On inspection at customs it is found that his passport and papers have suddenly become disabled and are now frozen. This is due to a uprising that has broken out in his country which has meant travel to and out of krakozha is on hold until the political situation
is cleared up and the govt back in control.Viktor is taken to see the head of the airport ,played superbly by Stanley tucci who tells viktor he must stay at the airport until further notice and that he is not to step foot outside the airport or he will be arrested.Viktor after realising what is happening then begins on a series of adventures inside the airport. These will invole an unlikely romance with an air stewardess Catherine zeta jones, making friends with airport workers ,a romantic Diego luna and a zany Kumar pakhana. Also he will show a funny side to his personality and demonstrate that he has a wonderfu caring heart. There are twists and turns all the way as the audience waits to see if he will be able to escape the terminal where he has been grounded
Tom hanks is terrific as Viktor, funny charming and emotional. When we first catch sight of viktor he makes us giggle because unable to speak to english he answers every question with a single "yes"..Then as he starts to pick up the language its very funny when he gets words mixed up and misunderstandings occur.Highlights include Viktor making a sandwich out of sauce, crackers and sauce again!..sweettalking a passenger out of trouble with the authorities and also fumbling in his attempts to woo the airstewardess.Hanks captures the characters fear of his surrondings by the expression on his face and tension in his eyes. When viktor gets good news he shows perfecty the joy and happiness he experiences by the he jumps up and down and greets and hugs everyone. Here Hanks shows the intial comedy skills that made him a star in 80s comedies splash[1984] and Big [1988].But when called for to enact the serious side of his character he is excellent there also.
Equally good and just as important to the film is hanks nemeis the head of customs Staney tucci. He literally chews up the scenery by being mean, nasty and vindictive in his attempts to make things tough for viktor. When says to viktor he will never see new york whilst he is in charge the audience wants to boo him off the screen.Razorsharp with an acid tongue hes someone you dont want to ecounter in a dark alley, and his battle of wits with viktor makes the film interesting and funny. The airport workers viktor befriends are also good.Deigo luna is a born romantic and makes a deal with viktor that he will give him food if he finds out more info on his lady love and this leads to hilarous results.Kumar pathana as indian cleaner gupta brings the house down with his lines and stubborn attitude. He keeps saying "DO U HAVE A APpointment" whenever viktor wants to speak him.
The only weak performance in the film i felt came from Catherine zeta jones as the airstewardess who is seeing a married man.She looks smart and beautiful but doesnt quite convince with her mannerisms and vocal delivery feeling a bit forced. Her scenes with viktor also dont ring quite true.Steven spiebergs direction is excellent though, his camerwork captures the atmosphere of an airport and all the feelings that occur in that environement. He paces the film nicely mixing the serious moments with the comic touches. The background score adds to the films theme
Overall the terminal is a must see for fans of hanks and spieberg and is one of my personal films of the year so far.
