it a high point in Shakespearian cinema. In Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor it starred the most bankable couple in Hollywood history as the sparring leads in the Bard's quick-firing comic battle of the sexes; and in Zeffirelli, it had a director with a Shakespearian pedigree second to none. But the reality is that this is Burton's picture all the way. His Petruchio is a weighty performance of such intelligence that the whole film is thrown off-kilter whenever he is on screen and the other performers just can't keep up. Apart from Michael Hordern's wonderfully distracted Baptista, Burton is the only actor in total, effortless command of the language. Taylor's bosomy glamour and fiery spirit are ample compensations for her occasionally murderous treatment of Katharina's verse. Whether or not she is really tamed by the end is another matter: those legendary violet eyes suggest otherwise. Ultimately it's a rich, bawdy and colourful romp, with Burton at the peak of his powers. The DVD includes the theatrical trailer, a "making-of" featurette and filmographies. --Piers Ford

the Shrew is a typical Elizabethan domestic comedy written around 1592. Petruchio, a gentleman of Verona, arrives in Padua and announces to his friends that "I come to wive it wealthily in Padua; / If wealthily, then happily in Padua". He soon finds that a group of men keen to marry Bianca, the younger daughter of rich old Baptista, are frustrated by her elder, "shrewish" sister, Katherine. There is much subsequent hilarity as Bianca's suitors make a bet with Petruchio that he cannot "tame" and marry Katherine. Despite Katherine's protestations, Petruchio goes ahead with the match, using deliberately unorthodox behaviour to confuse Katherine (including a scene where he starves her), claiming that "this is the way to kill a wife with kindness". The play culminates with a scene of Katherine's apparently spontaneous subjection to her husband's will, where she places her hand beneath her husband's foot, and tells the other wives present that "thy husband is thy lord, thy life, thy keeper". The play's gratuitous scenes of women being abused and vilified in the name of "comedy" has made many directors and critics very uncomfortable with the play, and many feminist critics have condemned contemporary productions of the play as reproducing certain 16th-century stereotypes concerning women who speak out against male authority. --Jerry Brotton

DVD Description
Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton star in this earthy, robust version of the classic Shakespeare comedy, which was director Franco Zeffirelli's first film. Michael York plays Lucentio, the young student who falls for comely Bianca (Natasha Pyne) and must recruit Petruchio (Burton) to wed her wild and violent older sister (Taylor) before their father will allow Bianca to entertain suitors. Watching two larger-than-life lovers like Burton and Taylor slug it out in their hilarious scenes of "courtship" is something even those with no fondness for Shakespeare can truly relish.

Advantages: Very good film, funny and easy to watch Disadvantages: Typical american flick
...This film is based on Shakespeare’s ,The taming of the shrew, and throughout the film direct quotes are used to emphasis what is going on. It is a film that is based in youth America in a typical American school with it’s many different cultures and friendship groups. Like ,taming of the shrew, the film revolves around two sisters one is sweet and innocent and the other Kat, is very independent and fierce. With a very protective father Bianca is not allowed to date until her sister Kat does something, which seems impossible. Bianca and her friends put a plot together to try and get Kat out and the story carries on from there.
The film itself is very funny and has a very good soundtrack, it has very many little quirky things that you will only pick up on if you watch the film more then once, which makes the film itself even more...

Advantages: funny, easy to watch, good adaptation of shakespeares play the taming of the shrew Disadvantages: the predictable plot may bother some people
...The Story:
10 thing i hate about you is based on Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew".
Bianca Stratford is a gorgeous and popular teenager at Padua high school, but her strict father won't allow her to date until her older sister Kat does. However Kat is an ill-tempered outsider who has no interest in any guy who might be interested in her. So Cameron, Bianca's would-be boyfriend bribes Patrick to ask out Kat. As the story develops, Kat eventually begins to fall for Patrick but Patrick actually ends up falling for her too which causes the rather predictable problems when she finds out he was being paid to date her.

...themes and clever ideas. Clueless is a restyle of Jane Austen's "Emma", She's All That is George Bernard Shaw's "Pygmalion", and Cruel Intentions is "Les Liaisons Dangereuses." 10 Things I Hate About You, the latest high school film and a brillant one at that, is a modern-day, kicked-up-a-notch version of William Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew." What sets this apart from its many competitors for teen cash is that not only does the movie feature a surprisingly edgy and intelligent script, but it offers a group of characters capable of holding an audience's interest for more than 90 minutes, at least. Which is excellent considering the attention span of today’s youth, and I’m just talking about me!
Kat (Julia Stiles) and Bianca (Larisa Oleynik) are sassy but very different siblings, and, regardless of sharing the same parents, do...
