Directed by Roger Kumbel, The Sweetest Thing stars Cameron Diaz as Christine, a 28 year-old commitment-phobe, and Christina Applegate and Selma Blair as her best friends Courtney and Jane.
Apparently, screenwriter Nancy Pimental based the main characters on herself and her best friend, the actress Kate Walsh (you may know her as Dr Addison Montgomery on Grey's anatomy and Private Practice).
I went to see this film when it was released in 2002, thinking it would be a lighthearted comedy perfect for a lazy afternoon. As it turned out, although certainly lighthearted, it was sadly lacking in the comedy department.
The film opens with a series of men telling us (the audience) about Christine Walters. These are her disgruntled ex-suiters, who complain that she's a "player", doesn't want anything serious, said-she-would-call-but-didn't, etc... This is to let us know right away this character's attitude towards men and her usual conduct in romantic relationships.
After this first segment we meet the three women. They live in San Francisco. Christine is in advertising, Courtney is a divorce lawyer and Jane is a shop assistant.
Christine and Courtney arrive home to a distraught Jane who has just been dumped by her boyfriend. They decide to take her out that night to some trendy bar/club where they spend the night both avoiding and flirting with men, whilst trying to find a man for Jane to hook up with.
Christine gets in a argument with fellow clubber Peter (Thomas Jane) who declines to take Jane off her hands, but later they get talking and start to get along. Peter says he will be going to his brother's wedding outside San Francisco but invites Christine to a party they will be holding at their hotel before leaving.
Christine doesn't go, and then regrets it. So Courtney encourages her to go after him and they both depart on a journey to find Peter at his brother's wedding, all along the way having a few (mis)adventures, none of which bear describing.
The film's tone is coarse and vulgar throughout. The jokes, 99.5% of which are about sex, range from salacious to gross-out.
There is one particular scene midway through the movie when they are at a restaurant, and they spontaneously erupt into a song and dance (set to the music of Right Said Fred's "I'm Too Sexy") that was considered so crude that it was cut from the film's U.S. theatrical release.
The scene was shown everywhere else in the world, though, and on the occasion I saw it, the packed cinema room that up until then had been somewhat noisy (with people eating, drinking, whispering to each other, occasionally snorting at the screen) suddenly fell preternaturally silent when this little musical number came on, bar the sound of people recoiling in their seats in horror, and it remained so for a considerable time after, the people apparently still stunned.
It's clear the film sets out to "shock" people with its depiction of unabashed female sexuality. Only, instead of irreverent, it is just crass.
The film was a commercial failure, and barely grossed enough at the box office to recoup its production cost.
If you are a fan of Porky's, you might like this, otherwise, do yourself a favour and don't waste your time.

Yes I remember that particular song and dance scene. (Now I never believe what I hear). Joking aside, I agree. It did seem to be out to shock people rather than be a laugh.

Advantages: Very funny and a great depiction of girls just having fun Disadvantages: The "Penis Song" scene is slightly out there, but memorable
